It's called the new black tie, and there's nothing black tie about it. The fashionistas are declaring that gentlemen's formal attire for the upcoming social season consists of a velvet blazer (you pick the color); tight-fitting slacks hemmed to just above the sock line (showing a little ankle); no shirt (smooth flesh preferred and six-pack optional); and a long, flowing, patterned silk scarf tied at the neck and draped down the bare-chested, open front.

Punxsutawney Phil, the famed furry marmot of Pennsylvania, has prognosticated an early spring, and high-end designers are doing their part to get our closets ready. As designers show their fall lines on the catwalks at this week's New York Fashion Week, they're also holding trunk shows displaying their spring lines here in Newport-Mesa. Trunk shows can give shoppers a glimpse into the new lines for the season and often give them a chance to buy pieces before they're up on the store racks.

Punxsutawney Phil, the famed furry marmot of Pennsylvania, has prognosticated an early spring, and high-end designers are doing their part to get our closets ready. As designers show their fall lines on the catwalks at this week's New York Fashion Week, they're also holding trunk shows displaying their spring lines here in Newport-Mesa. Trunk shows can give shoppers a glimpse into the new lines for the season and often give them a chance to buy pieces before they're up on the store racks.

The Design Exchange in Costa Mesa is a wholesale home furnishings store that offers current designs at low prices. Many model home designers across Orange County shop at the Design Exchange, and Bill Blaine, the chief executive of the company, is a consultant to top designers on new home model developments including Ladera Ranch, Talega, Rancho Santa Margarita, Newport Coast and senior living facilities. The home accent and accessories store is getting a new shipment of upholstered chairs and Bombay chests, and carries lots of floor and table lamps.

COOK The glam gals of the Sound of Music Guild supporting the Orange County Performing Arts Center gathered at Neiman Marcus in Fashion Island this week to celebrate a soft opening of the new dining room in the store called Mariposa. The white on white, stark contemporary restaurant with splashes of vibrant color will open to the public in two weeks. A signature Midori martini will be the cocktail du jour for the Neiman's crowd. Designers have created a very special seating arrangement for sampling the martinis.

FRIDAY Chanel Spring Trunk Show Neiman Marcus at Fashion Island hosts a Chanel Spring Trunk Show, showing off its 2011 Spring Collection. For more information, call (949) 759-1900. Shabbat Service Temple Bat Yahm, 1011 Camelback St., Newport Beach, holds its Friday night Shabbat Service at 6 p.m. in the Morgan Chapel. The service will be led by Rabbi Mark S. Miller, Rabbi Gersh Zylberman and Cantor Grant and will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat. Guests are welcome.

It was a Tupperware party on steroids, with the mostly female guests sipping chocolate milk out of shot glasses. Fashion royalty took Newport Beach by storm Tuesday. Designer darling Zac Posen debuted his spring/summer 2010 collection with a private runway show at Fashion Island’s Neiman Marcus. It was the first time that the clothing designer, whose clients include Hollywood starlets, has shown his full line outside New York, America’s fashion capital. He’ll be following up today with a public appearance at Neiman Marcus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Zac Posen is probably the youngest established American designer, and we are especially proud that this collection has not been shown anywhere outside of New York City, so O.C. rocks!

There were no stars in the sky. A thick marine layer hugged the coast, blanketing the Villa Di Sogni, the spectacular coastal estate of Karen Karen and Bruce Cahill . COSTA MESA — It’s still late summer, but the La Perla shop at South Coast Plaza is starting to look like Halloween — or maybe Valentine’s Day with a dark twist. The lingerie dealer recently debuted its new Black Label Collection, which sports a different theme every season. The fall-winter line, which will be on display through December, is steeped in medieval and gothic imagery — which translates to plush silver crosses, mock-chastity-belt neck collars and other garments that blend the sensual and the spooky.
