Sometimes a trip is more than just a great escape. That's what happened to Kallie Dovel when she first traveled to Uganda in summer 2007. It was there that she saw what women were going through: little to no education, lack of health care, extreme poverty. But there was one thing they had: paper beads they made by hand and turned into jewelry. Unfortunately, there wasn't a market for them to sell the items. Dovel started thinking. She brought home a box of the Ugandan jewelry and showed it to friends and family, who were amazed.

The 16th annual Guilds of the Center fashion extravaganza moved from daytime to evening this season. Chaired by Kathy Fleming , the party unfolded March 24 at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel. The event began with a champagne reception on the very trendy Westin roof deck, followed by a très chic fashion show produced by Escada, and a filet of salmon dinner served by the Westin Hotel staff in the main ballroom. One of the major sponsors of the evening was Lugano Diamonds, represented by owners Idit and Moti Ferder as well as Lugano vice president Stuart Winston . This year, the Guilds of the Center celebrated the "kindness, generosity and impeccable style" of Newport philanthropist Zee Allred . Following a heartfelt speech by Allred praising the efforts of the entire community for decades of unselfish support of the performing arts in Orange County, Moti Ferder presented her with an exquisite 66-carat blue star sapphire and diamond necklace.

Newport Beach police are looking for a thief who stole nearly $700,000 in women's jewelry from a home in a gated community. On Tuesday, a woman in her 40s noticed that her diamond necklaces, bracelets and earrings had been removed from her closet, according to Sgt. Steve Burdette. She had left town for the holidays Dec. 22 and returned several weeks ago, but had not looked inside her closet until Tuesday, Burdette said. The woman lives in the 100 block of Old Course Drive, in the One Ford Road neighborhood.

Those who stand sentry before a soccer goal have openly embraced mysticism in order to multiply their mystique. Estancia High junior Edgar Vega admits his persona on the pitch has as much to do with the preternatural as his vigilant preparation. In his case, inspiration has aligned with perspiration, allowing the Eagles to maintain their aspiration of defending their Orange Coast League title. The agile and aggressive goalkeeper, sidelined during the team?s 1-6-2 start with a fractured left index finger, has helped the Eagles go 9-2-1 since.

Kids can learn about jewelry and how to make their own with jewelry craft books offered at the Newport Beach Public Library. As with most craft books, these cover the equipment and materials necessary to make jewelry, along with some safety tips. Kids will discover the joy of creating and wearing jewelry that is uniquely theirs with the help of some of these titles. “Jewelry Crafts” by Barrie Caldecott gives kids instructions on all sorts of make-it-yourself jewelry projects, including one you can’t wear — a decorated Faberge-style egg. Projects that are made to be worn include a foam bangle, plastic bracelet and necklace, and an ornamental glass stone ring.
