National Day

December 29, 2008
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday falls on Jan. 19 this year. So does National Popcorn Day. But don’t worry, they don’t have to conflict. You can celebrate Popcorn Day Jan. 17 and 18 at the Orange County Market Place on the Costa Mesa fairgrounds. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a giant popcorn stilt walker will welcome shoppers, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday Kaptain Kernel, “The King of Korn” (no relation to the ’90s nu metal band) will entertain shoppers with “popcorn spill gags,” juggling and other trucks from his magic bag of popcorn.

COSTA MESA — Carolyn Charkey hadn’t heard of National Popcorn Day when she arrived at the Orange County Market Place Saturday morning — but since she got a free bag of popcorn, she was happy to celebrate. “I wasn’t surprised,” the Fort Collins, Colorado resident said as she stood in line by the popcorn stand. “There’s a National Paper Match Day, a national day and week and month for everything.” The origins of National Popcorn Day appear to be a mystery.

Though Walker "Bud" Mahurin will commemorate Memorial Day in Washington, D.C., leading the Korean War contingent of the National Memorial Day Parade, he recognizes the somber holiday is not really about parades or barbecues or sales. During his 15 years of active duty as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, Mahurin, a Newport Island resident, witnessed the passing of countless soldiers, and after bailing out three times and crashing once, the retired colonel barely escaped a similar fate.
