The TH Hoops fifth-grade basketball team comprised of players from Newport Beach became All-Net national champions for its division this past weekend. The team went undefeated in five games played and took home the hardware in the national championship game played at Cypress College. TH Hoops beat the Tustin Thunder for the championship, 45-37. Trailing by six at the end of the first quarter, the team rallied. Led by Chase Hall, who had 17 points while playing suffocating defense, TH Hoops battled back from its first-quarter deficit.

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys fifth-grade team capped off an exciting season by winning a 2013 All-Net national championship at Fullerton College Sunday. The Tar Heels went 5-0 over the weekend in the top division and beat rival Yorba Linda Pumas twice to win the title. After placing second in regular-season play and in All-Net Sectionals, the boys from Newport-Mesa willed their way to the championship. In pool play, the Tar Heels opened with the previously undefeated Pumas, who were 18-0 coming into the game and had beaten the Tar Heels three times during the season and playoffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Concordia University men's basketball team had the look of a runner-up in the early moments of the NAIA Division I national championship game Tuesday. But the No. 4-seeded Eagles wouldn't let a slow and ugly start get to them. They responded and beat No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist, 72-69, to win their second national title. Oklahoma Baptist (32-5) appeared on its way to winning its third national title with a 16-1 lead in the first half. But Concordia (31-7)

Former UC Irvine women's volleyball standout Whitney Pavlik and her partner, Jenny Kropp, won the Huntington Beach Open to win the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series national championship Sunday near the Huntington Beach Pier. Pavlik and Kropp, the No. 1 seeded team, defeated No. 4-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Rachel Scott, 21-14, 21-18, in Sunday's final. Pavlik and Kropp captured their sixth Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Series win of the season and will end their season in Thailand at the FIVB World Tour event, Oct. 23-28.

Kevin Burch, the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches' Assn. Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year at Springfield College, has been named assistant men's volleyball coach at UC Irvine. Burch helped Springfield to the inaugural Division III national championship and a record-setting 33-5 mark. With Burch's assistance, the Pride finished the year with a .381 hitting percentage, the best in the nation. "I'm excited for the opportunity to join this special program," said Burch, a captain on the 2008 Orange Coast College men's volleyball team.

Former UC Irvine All-American Carson Clark had a match-best 18 kills and 19 points to lead the United States men's team to a 29-27, 25-20, 25-11 victory over Argentina in the final of the Pan American Cup on Saturday in Colorado Springs. Clark, a 6-foot-5 opposite who was joined on the Team USA roster by former Anteaters Jordan DuFault, Dan McConnell and Ryan Ammerman, as well as Corona del Mar High and UC Santa Barbara product Dylan Davis, had a kill percentage of 62.1 and a hitting efficiency percentage of .517.

There never was any moment when Ken Ammann "decided" he wanted to be a coach. In a way, it was always a given, it was in his blood. Ammann's parents taught and coached at Edison and Fountain Valley high schools, so it was natural for Ammann to find his way back to school after he completed his own education. Even his time as a kid when he roamed the sidelines as a ball boy for Edison football games along with future NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich was an experience from which he learned.

Most of the players from Concordia University's NAIA men's basketball team received their national championship rings earlier this week during a ceremony at the school, but there was one notable player missing. Cameron Gliddon was the named the NAIA national tournament MVP after the Eagles won the second national crown in school history by winning five consecutive games in six days, culminating with a 72-69 victory over Oklahoma Baptist in the championship game last March. Gliddon, though, was half a world away in his home country of Australia, where he just began is professional basketball career in the National Basketball League, which includes teams from Australia and New Zealand.

The NCAA women's volleyball national tournament's final eight featured teams with three players who played for local high schools, and it is Newport Harbor's Tatum Norton playing for the national championship with the Oregon Ducks. Norton, who was an All-CIF libero last season, has been a serving specialist as a freshman for the Ducks, who will play for the national title Saturday against the Texas Longhorns. Oregon played against a favored Nebraska Huskers team in Omaha, Neb. in the quarterfinals on Saturday, with over 13,000 loud Nebraska fans all dressed in red. After losing the first set, the Ducks used ball control and serving to win the next three and earn a berth in the NCAA Final Four.

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys' fifth-grade team won the 2012 All-Net national championship last weekend in Brea capping off a stellar season for the team. The Tar Heels went 26-1 and won the All-Net league championship, All-Net Super Sectionals championship and All-Net national championship with a strong group of boys from the Newport-Mesa area. In pool play, the Tar Heels beat a solid team in the Vallejo Hustlers, 54-33, a familiar foe Placentia P-Town, 46-43, and Redwood, 57-29, to finish first in the pool.

KANSAS CITY — Preston Wynne stepped up to deliver what can be described as the Vanguard University men's basketball team's biggest win in its history. He scored a career-high 42 points to lead the Lions past Saint Gregory, 108-88, to give Vanguard a chance at even a bigger win. The Lions will play for the NAIA Division I National Championship Tuesday at 5 p.m. PT against Emmanuel. Wynne connected on 14 of his 19 shots (73.6%), and hit six of nine from three-point range. "Tonight was a great team performance," Wynne said in a press release.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Vanguard University Lions may not be who we thought they were, but if one wants to crown Coach Rhett Soliday's men's basketball players, one can now officially crown them. The Lions defeated Emmanuel College of Georgia, 70-65, in the championship game of the NAIA Division I Tournament on Tuesday at Municipal Auditorium. Vanguard's ninth straight win gave the program its first national championship and matched the 2008 women's basketball title as only the second national crown in the history of the Costa Mesa-based school.

Newport Beach, accustomed to entertaining visitors, lavished luxury on a special clientele this week: Bowl Championship Series football players and their fans. The coastal city geared up to serve as the home base for the teams participating in Monday's BCS game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Florida State and Auburn teams, coaches, alumni associations and bands are spread across Newport-Mesa at the Island Hotel, Balboa Bay Resort, Hyatt Regency, Radisson Hotel and Westin South Coast Plaza.

When Christophe Killian competed in the 2013 Lido 14 National Class Championships last week, he went up against his father, Chris, and 13-year-old brother, Porter, in the gold fleet. Killian said it was a bit of a different experience to compete against family. Away from the regatta, they remain family. But on the water, it's a different story. "There's no face to who you're sailing against," Killian said. "It's just another boat. " Killian, 16, a skipper who will be a senior at Corona del Mar High, treated everyone the same at the regatta and aimed for the top spot.

The first time Derek Pickell sailed on his own, he said he felt scared. He doesn't remember if he was 5 or 6 at the time, but he will never forget that first day in an eight-foot sailboat in Newport Harbor. "I had to make decisions and steer around other boats," Pickell said. "I was all alone. " Ten years later, Pickell found himself by himself, in a same sized boat, just in another location. This time, he felt much better after his ride ended. Pickell sailed to victory at the Junior Sabot National Championship gold fleet event in San Diego on Wednesday.

The Pateadores Costa Mesa under-14 boys' team claimed the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship after it posted a 4-0 shutout win against the Michigan Wolves 99 in Overland Park, Kan., on Saturday. Christopher Lopez scored two goals and Santiago Galera added another goal for the Pateadores. The Pateadores went 3-1 during the six-day tournament, their lone loss came against Penn Fusion. The Pateadores outscored their opponents, 9-2. Lopez and Galera recorded three goals each during the tournament.

Orange Coast College won the varsity four and the second novice eight on Sunday at the American Collegiate Rowing Assn. national championships in Gainesville, Ga., near Atlanta. OCC completed the 2,000-meter course in six minutes, 18.8 seconds to defeat Michigan (6:22.9) in the second novice eight final. In that boat for OCC were James Paino, Sean Buck, Angel Galvan, Joe Martin, Jourdan Richman, Cody Raphael, Hayes Dollis, Cody Ridens and coxswain Helena Cosentiini. In the varsity four grand final, OCC finished in 6:36.8, more than a second better than runner-up Purdue (6:38.1)

MOBILE, Ala. - A trip to the NAIA National Championship title match appeared so promising for the Vanguard University men's tennis team. The No. 3-seeded Lions, who entered the semifinals with a 24-0 record, built a 2-1 lead in doubles. However, No. 2 seed Auburn Montgomery dominated in singles to earn a 5-2 victory and a spot in Saturday's NAIA National Championship final. Auburn Montgomery will be looking for its 10th national championship when they face Embry-Riddle (Fla.)

A pair of Newport Harbor High products will be key players for USC, which will compete in the second American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship tournament Friday through Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala. Former Sailors indoor standout Kirby Burnham teams with Stevi Robinson to form USC's No. 1 pair, while 2012 Newport Harbor graduate Cinnamon Sary joins Katie Fuller on the school's No. 2 team. The event will include team and individual pairs competition.

Last year, the Corona del Mar High sailing team was one point away from qualifying for the High School Dinghy National Championships. This year the Sea Kings left no doubt. CdM finished third at the Pacific Coast Championships Sunday at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro. CdM edged Newport Harbor, which finished fourth and also qualified to compete for the Mallory Trophy May 11-12 in Chicago. CdM and Newport Harbor competed against the best teams in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Assn.
