WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 85, Williams Woods 60 FRANKFORT, Ky - Junior guard Nicole Ballestero scored 25 points and three other Lions scored in double figures in the second-round game of the NAIA Championships on Friday at the Frankfort Convention Center. The win sets up a quarterfinal clash with top-seeded Freed-Hardeman of Tennessee (33-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m. PST. Freed-Hardeman defeated Campbellsville of Kentucky, 71-52, on Friday. Vanguard (25-3) shot 51.6% from the field (32 for 62)

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY State championships FRESNO - Orange Coast College claimed the team title, led by freshman Karen Silvas, who finished eighth. Silvas completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 37.77 seconds to help the Pirates produce 79 points, 21 better than runner-up Glendale. LEXINGTON, Kentucky - The Vanguard University men's tennis team defeated Oklahoma Christian University, 5-0, in the second round of the NAIA Tennis Championships Tuesday. Stefan Johansson and Olli Helminen knocked off OCU's No. 1 doubles team, 8-3, while Peter Skrzeczynski and Josef Stromberg defeated OCU's No. 2 team, 8-5. Due to injuries to the rest of Oklahoma Christian's squad, the other three matches were defaulted to the Lions. Vanguard will next face Golden State Athletic Conference-rival Azusa Pacific today at 11 a.m local time.

MOBILE, Ala. ? The Vanguard University men's tennis team defeated Cedarville of Ohio, 9-0, in the first round of the 24-team NAIA National Championships on Monday at the Mobile Tennis Center. Vasileios Psyrras won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while fellow Lions Gregory Chevalier (No. 2) and Michael Martin (No. 6) won 12 of 13 games in singles. Dieter Weislmaier won, 6-1, 6-1, William Strom won, 6-1, 6-2, and Andreas Reckziegel won, 6-3, 6-0, in singles. Chevalier and Strom teamed to win defeat Kevin Furst and Jared Michanski, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.

MOBILE, Ala. ? The season came to an abrupt end for Vanguard University's men's and women's tennis teams Wednesday with identical 5-0 losses in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships. The Lions women were defeated by Golden State Athletic Conference rival Azusa Pacific. The men were blanked by the University of Auburn-Montgomery. Making their third consecutive quarterfinal appearance, the sixth-seeded Vanguard women (19-6) were throttled in the three doubles matches and No. 3 Azusa Pacific closed out the match with two straight-sets singles victories.

TRACK AND FIELD NAIA Championships FRESNO — Vanguard University's Grace Jepngetich finished second in the women's 10,000 meters to collect All-American honors in 36 minutes, 27.46 seconds, a personal record, at Fresno Pacific University. Jason Valenzuela finished 14th in the men's 10,000 in 32:55.51. Tony Altobelli LEXINGTON, Kent. - The Vanguard University men's tennis team saw its season come to an end Tuesday following its 5-1 loss to Florida's Flagler College in the second round of the NAIA National Championships. Joakim Ulfvebrand was the lone winner for the Lions (13-12), defeating Flagler's Dan Siari, 6-4, 6-3. Flagler, seeded fourth, is 21-3. The Lions advanced to the second round after defeating Virginia Intermont, 5-1, Monday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Freed-Hardeman 60, Vanguard 49 FRANKFORT, Ky. - Junior guard Nicole Ballestero scored 23 points to lead the Lions in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championships on Saturday at the Frankfort Convention Center. Ballestero was nine for 24 form the field while carrying the offensive load, as fellow All-Golden State Athletic Conference performer Esther Timmermans was limited to two points and four rebounds before fouling out in 31 minutes. Senior Chelsea Alfafara had 14 points, including four-of-six shooting from three-point range for the Lions, who finish their season 25-4.
