Before the season began, UC Irvine men's volleyball coach David Kniffin said he needed to see as much adversity for his team as possible. Now 19 matches in, the prophecy has largely come true, as the two-time-defending NCAA champion Anteaters entered Friday's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation home match against UC Santa Barbara in ninth place. Since only the top eight in the 13-school conference make the MPSF Tournament, from which the winner emerges with a guaranteed berth in the NCAA Tournament, even the most conservative observer might note that UCI is living a bit on the edge.

With a major Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match-up this Saturday night at UC Irvine's Bren Event Center between UCI, ranked No. 8, and the No. 1-ranked UCLA Bruins, it is interesting to watch as our local boys excel in the college ranks. UCI's Connor Hughes (a Costa Mesa resident) who led Mater Dei to 2009 state championship, will lead the Anteaters. For UCLA, Ian Sequeira (Newport Harbor) starts at libero for the Bruins. UCLA, coached by former UCI coach John Speraw, defeated UCI on Monday night, 3-0, but this season, everybody seems to capable of beating every team.

MALIBU - The road to a potential third straight national championship  has begun somewhat tenuously  for the UC Irvine men's volleyball team.  But some of that has to do with, well, playing on the road. In the fifth of their six straight road matches to open the season, the Anteaters, who began the season ranked No. 1 nationally but slipped to No. 3 after falling at Loyola of Chicago last week, dropped their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, to an amped-up Pepperdine squad that had yet to play an official match until Friday.
