Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb have been named USA Volleyball Female and Male Athlete of the Year, respectively, in beach volleyball. May-Treanor, 35, and partner Kerri Walsh Jennings won their third straight Olympic gold medal in London last summer. The legendary duo lost only one set and swept to a 21-16, 21-16 final victory over April Ross and Jennifer Kessy. May-Treanor led Olympic women's players in digs with 107 on 225 attempts for a 48% success rate.

A TV reporter had a question prepared for Mark Burnette and each of his family members Monday morning near a volleyball net on the sand at Huntington Beach Pier. She started with the youngest, and cutest, Burnette, Carinne, a 7-year-old who came with her family to California from Tennessee because her Dad won a contest put on by AT&T. They were there to play a friendly beach volleyball match against a famous duo. "Is this a dream come true for you," the TV reporter asked Carinne, who smiled.

If Olympic beach volleyball players April Ross and Jennifer Kessy seemed right at home Wednesday afternoon as they signed autographs and posed for pictures at CdM Fitness, it's because they were. The pair have trained at the gym on East Coast Highway for about two years. The gym's owner, David Jurevich, accompanied the team to London as their trainer. And Ross and Kessy, who have spent the last month or so since the games toting around some new silver hardware, are both Orange County-bred.

Newport Harbor High product April Ross and fellow Olympic women's beach volleyball silver medalist Jennifer Kessy will be the featured guests at a reception held at CDM Fitness in Corona del Mar on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Ross and Kessy, who lost to Newport Harbor product Misty May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, in the Olympic final in London last month, will be available to sign autographs and answer questions. Misty May-Treanor closed out her remarkable career with a third consecutive Olympic gold medal. The former Newport Harbor High standout is also ending it by landing on the iconic cereal box, as it was announced Thursday that she is featured on a limited edition Wheaties box. Wheaties, known as the breakfast of champions, is honoring the lifetime accomplishments of two gold-medal winning athletes, May-Treanor and swimmer Michael Phelps. May-Treanor won the Olympic gold medal for an unprecedented third straight time in beach volleyball with partner Kerri Walsh Jennings at the London Olympics.

Like most Americans, Dan Glenn had a rooting interest on both sides of the net Wednesday. The Newport Harbor High girls' volleyball coach entering his 27th season said watching the live afternoon feed of the women's beach volleyball gold-medal match from the Olympics in London, in which former Sailors Misty May-Treanor and April Ross and their respective partners did battle, was a win-win situation. "[Tuesday's semifinals] was the big day," Glenn said of May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings defeating the No. 2-seeded Chinese duo, while Ross and Jennifer Kessy rallied to beat the top-seeded Brazilian tandem to set up the All-American final.

Misty May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High standout who grew up in Costa Mesa, along with Kerri Walsh Jennings opened the first round of single elimination with a resounding 21-13, 21-12 victory in 30 minutes against Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer of Netherlands in women's beach volleyball at the London Olympics. May-Treanor and Walsh, the two-time defending Olympic gold medalists and the No. 3 seeds, advanced to the quarterfinals and remained undefeated at 4-0. They will play Italy's No. 7 Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti in the quarterfinals Sunday at 11 a.m. PST. April Ross, also a former Newport Harbor standout who grew up in Costa Mesa, and Jennifer Kessy, seeded No. 4, will face No. 10 Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova of Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m. May-Treanor led with 16 kills, while Walsh Jennings had four blocks.

It seemed inevitable their paths would cross in a meaningful way. After all Misty May-Treanor and April Ross went to the same high school, Newport Harbor, though they graduated at different times. They grew up in the same town, played at the same gyms and learned the sand game on the same beaches. Of course they have a connection. Five years ago, so the story goes, Ross was about to form a team with Jennifer Kessy. The new duo played in a secluded practice match against the best: Misty and her partner Kerri Walsh.

Concordia University's Master of Coaching and Athletic Administration (MCAA) department will host the California Coaches Conference this week, a five-day conference Monday through Friday focusing on "developing excellence in coaching and athletics. " Most of the conference will take place at Concordia, but some of it will be at Irvine Valley College, where the color gold will be prevalent. That's because IVC director of volleyball Tom Pestolesi will have two very gold-minded guest speakers for his course titled "Advanced theory and strategy for coaching volleyball.
