IRVINE - UC Irvine senior Miguel Ibarra stood two steps outside the post-game huddle of Anteaters, coughing uncontrollably into one sweat-drenched sleeve, then the other. It was a cold-stricken Ibarra, shifted from midfield to forward about 12 minutes into the second half of a Big West Conference men's soccer home game against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, who proved to be the best medicine for a somewhat sluggish attack for the hosts. Ibarra scored one goal and generated another to help No. 7-ranked UCI earn a 2-0 triumph to take sole possession of first place in what figures to be a balanced and potent conference.

IRVINE — There was a time when UC Irvine men's soccer players and coaches would have taken consolation in winning the Big West Conference regular-season and tournament titles, then not catching a break in the NCAA Tournament. But it speaks to the progress that the recent frequency of those accomplishments has created that those days no longer exist. One could argue that geography worked against the UC Irvine men's soccer program when it fell into the newly created four-team South Division of the Big West Conference this season. But with an ambitious, some might say imposing schedule that includes road games at four of the top 11 teams in the national preseason coaches' poll, Anteaters Coach George Kuntz has proved that when it comes to finding top-flight competition, UCI knows no boundaries. No. 13-ranked UCI has averaged 15 wins the last four seasons, during which it has won three conference regular-season and three conference tournament titles and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.
