Southern Californians are getting a rare chance to hear directly from autism experts next week when Children’s Hospital of Orange County co-hosts “Autism Research: Fact and Fiction” at Mariners Church worship center. CHOC has teamed up with the UCI School of Medicine and the Grandparent Autism Network. The keynote speaker, Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen, will discuss facts about autism and new areas of autism research. Pediatric, neurological and biology experts will highlight today’s approaches to autism in Orange County.

Blair Farley is everyday people. Folks in the Newport-Mesa area know him best as a pastor and technology director at Mariners Church. But in his hometown, Huntington Beach, Farley has taken on a different calling: politics. He is running for City Council in Surf City because he believes the city in recent years has favored developers and special-interest groups over residents. "Everyone thinks every election is critical, but this one really does have potential to shape what our city looks like moving forward," said Farley.

IRVINE — In Orange County's population of 3 million, it's easy to feel isolated. But film producers and Mariners Church members John Ward and Jeff Pries believe that this isolation is a mirage — that the actions of every person create a domino effect that touches others. To help teach people that your every action matters, the duo are part of a team that produced a 20th Century Fox feature film, "I AM. " Likened to a faith-based version of the Oscar-winning "Crash," the film depicts the moral struggles of 10 strangers whose lives connect through a series of seemingly random and independent events.

A thin line of green tape and some self control was the only thing holding back the stampede. The racers were primed, leaning as far forward as they could without falling or bracing their feet to get the best start. Candy was on the line. After a five-second countdown blared through the loudspeakers, the furious footrace started. Parents chased behind as a blur of elbows, baskets and little feet that stormed a football filed-sized lawn at Mariners Church in Irvine the Saturday afternoon before Easter.

Ms. Saxton was born July 17, 1926, in PA. She was a retired waitress. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Manzano and 3 grand children and 2 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Orville Johnson, having lived a life that blessed his wife, children and friends, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on October 12th, 2012 at the age of 93. AMemorial Service and reunion will be held this Saturday, November 17, 2012, 10:30 am at Liberty Baptist Church located at 1000 Bison Avenue, Newport Beach, CA 92660, reception at the church to follow. All are most welcome. During WWII Lloyd served under Douglas McArthur and was awarded the Bronze Star for an act of danger and endurance that saved his fellow officers from capture.

Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University, will speak from 9 a.m. to noon at the Jan. 12 meeting of The Grandparent Autism Network, a local group helping to educate grandparents about autism and its impact on their families. Baron-Cohen will present facts and discuss new areas of research, followed by a research round table at the meeting, at Mariners Church, 5001 Newport Coast Drive, Irvine. Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door.

An orphan’s chances of being adopted drop precipitously after age 5, studies show. But Mariners Church in Newport Beach is hoping to find a home for eight Columbian orphans today during the Summer Miracles Scavenger Hunt. Potential parents will be able to interact with the kids in the context of a community scavenger hunt. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Mariners Church, 5001 Newport Coast Drive. Kidsave International, the event sponsor, has flown the kids from Colombia to give them a chance to find a family in the U.S. “The participation in the activities is unique in that the prospective parents will be able to interact and play with the kids in a more interactive manner,” said Karl Boehm of Kidsave.

Joy Owens, a longtime resident of Irvine, California, peacefully passed away with her friends and family by her side. A patron of the arts and leader in the Irvine community with the Irvine Dance Academy (1976-2004), she touched many lives with her passion for dance, beautiful recitals and award winning dance competitions. She was born in Trinity County near Groveton, Texas on July 21, 1932. She met and married Max Owens and had 2 children. She attended University of Houston. She moved with her family to Irvine in 1972.

Bob passed peacefully from this life the morning of January 6th with his daughter Ashley and son-in-law, Mike, by his side after his brave and humble battle with cancer. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and caregivers during the last days of his life. Bob was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, but lived in San Diego, California for most of his life. In 2000, after retiring from the oil industry, Bob decided to move to Playa Potrero in Costa Rica where he lived for the last 13 years.

Ali Cooper was at a friend's house when she took the test. "Positive," it read. A trip to a Birth Choice health clinic confirmed it - she was 16 years old and pregnant. Gripped by fear, Cooper wondered how she would face her parents. Would they chastise or stand by her? The Irvine resident quickly decided not to go through with the pregnancy. She wasn't ready to give birth, she thought, only to be overcome by a different kind of terror. "I was more scared to have an abortion than to be a mom," she said.

Grace Ferrell has one grandfather who taught her how to play golf, and another grandfather who likes to take the credit for doing so. Grace grew up practicing with her father's dad, Doug Ferrell, at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. But last year Doug moved to Texas, where he works at a golf course. Now Grace sometimes plays with her mother's dad, Roger Johnson, although he's still getting the hang of the sport. "Luckily, my other grandpa plays too," Grace Ferrell said with a smile.

Authorities on Sunday arrested two men suspected in an armed robbery who were tracked to an Irvine church that borders Newport Beach. Timothy Lavert Bates, 25, and Albert Fletcher Brown Jr., 26, were arrested about 1 p.m. at Mariners Church, 5001 Newport Coast Drive, for allegedly robbing an AT&T store in Laguna Niguel half an hour earlier. A silver handgun was brandished when the pair robbed the store, in the 27000 block of La Paz Road, according to an Orange County Sheriff's Department news release.

Mariners Church in Irvine is launching a weekly gathering for single young adults called The Point, according to a news release. The Point - which will be held Thursdays beginning Sept. 12 - is part of the church's efforts to expand its programs for the more youthful members of the community. "The Point is a new community for young, single adults who aren't just looking to get married but to build genuine relationships," Pastor Tim Keller said in the release. The release said the new program is in response to a growing trend of people choosing to stay single.

Obituary of David L. Roberson August 16, 1941 - July 20, 2013 David LeRoy Roberson passed away suddenly on July 20, 2013 in his Newport Coast home.  He was almost 72.  Dave led a full life through faith in and by the grace of Jesus Christ.  The Lord honored his wish to die quickly and at home with his wife Linda, after his health markedly declined in recent years due to pulmonary fibrosis. Dave was born in Bell, California on August 16, 1941 to Melvin and Vivian Roberson.  Dave and his only sibling, brother Don Roberson (1943-2012)

Donald B. Christeson Feb. 2, 1926-June 7, 2013 Born in Huron, South Dakota, Don's family moved to Los Angeles in 1929.  Despite a tumultuous Depression-era childhood, Don earned his Eagle Scout; an indicator of the noble man he would become. After graduating from Manual Arts High he served as Gunner's Mate on the destroyer USS Wickes. The Wickes repelled so many suicide attacks that it received a Unit Commendation from President Roosevelt for heroic duty protecting the fleet at Okinawa.
