Leopard skin rugs abound while lavish furniture and pictures of fashion idols greet visitors to the Empire Academy of Makeup in Costa Mesa. So it certainly appears to be the proper habitat for fabulousness, but the academy’s staff is gunning for something more than skin deep when they begin their Camp Beauty for teenagers Monday. The camp will run for two weeks and is open to girls between 14 and 17. Though the program centers on educating girls about make-up, fashion and skin care, it will also take a more holistic and well-rounded approach.

Can simple makeup and costumery bring out the evil intentions in a person? Looking back at a childhood where the worlds of "Sleeping Beauty" and "Snow White" were as natural to me as the one I actually lived in, I can't think of any time where I wanted to be the villain. I grew up in an ultra-pro-Disney household. My father has worked at Disneyland for more than three decades, and is responsible for keeping Walt's original vision intact while ensuring the technology is current on rides like it's a small world and the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Orange Coast College's community education office will hold a beauty workshop for women 35 and older July 8. The class will teach anti-aging and timesaving beauty techniques. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 104 of OCC's business education center. Betty Nethery, a former fashion model and makeup artist, will lead the workshop. She will advise on personal skin care, hairstyles and makeup selections. Participants will also learn how to develop their own 10-minute makeup regimen.

South Coast Plaza kicked off its first weekend celebrating makeup, hair and beauty with a MAC Cosmetics exhibit Friday that organizers said is unlike any other in the nation. Posh Paradise marked the launch of South Coast Plaza Style, which highlights the shopping center's beauty boutiques, concepts and salons, said Debra Gunn Downing, the center's executive director of marketing. At Jewel Court on Friday stood four display windows adorned in deep-colored leaves representing the fall and winter seasons.

Christine Carrillo Twenty-five years ago, Joan Mazzei had a vision. From it, the single mother of three transitioned her hair-styling career into a booming cosmetic business. It was a somewhat selfish response to the numerous inquiries she had received about her cosmetic talents. Longing for a more creative outlet, Mazzei, who has an educational background in art, decided to take a chance. She went to cosmetology school and has been reservedly sharing her talents ever since.

The biggest shopping day of the year is Friday, and The Orange County Market Place will open early (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for shoppers. Admission is free Friday, and there will be hundreds of vendors offering thousands of gift ideas. The swap meet will continue every weekend during November and December, including an additional shopping day Dec. 21. A toy drive for Project Cuddle, a local charity for abandoned children, will be on Saturday and continue every weekend through Dec 9. The client looks good -- natural yet colored. As a freelance makeup artist contracted with the Empire Academy of Makeup in Costa Mesa, Golovkin's philosophy is: "Makeup's just to enhance features, not to mask features."

Alicia Robinson Corona del Mar hair and makeup stylist Lenny McConnell wants each of his clients to feel like the most important person in his salon. One way he's found to do that is by making each the only other person in the salon. After working in his native Scotland, Paris and Beverly Hills, McConnell earlier this month opened a postage-stamp-sized work space off of East Coast Highway. The salon holds a sink, a chair for shampooing hair and a chair for cutting and styling.

Brown, who has been referred to as the stylist to the local stars, has been trimming and snipping the hair of the social movers and shakers in town for many years. He has become a confidant for many local women who make the wheels of social, cultural and business circles turn.

The CIF Southern Section Council approved a releaguing plan Thursday that will change league affiliations for four Newport-Mesa Unified District high schools. The changes begin in the fall of 2010 and run through the spring of 2014. In the Sunset League, Newport Harbor will welcome newcomer Huntington Beach. Edison, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos and Marina remain. Former Sunset League participant Esperanza will move to the Century League. In the Pacific Coast League, Corona del Mar will welcome newcomers Northwood and Woodbridge.

In a clever plan hatched by Costa Mesa police, a detective disguised himself as a UPS delivery man dropping off a package in hopes it would lure in the buyer, a pizza delivery man who allegedly used a stolen credit card for the purchase. “We wanted to make it look as realistic as possible,” said Costa Mesa Lt. Paul Dondero. Thursday afternoon detectives watched as Jason Le Tran, 23, of Fountain Valley, collected the UPS box from the doorstep of a vacant apartment in the 1000 block of South Coast Drive in Costa Mesa, police said.

Newport’s premier food and entertainment festival, the Taste of Newport, celebrates 20 years at Fashion Island today through Sunday. The super-tasty event has allowed the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce to give more than $172,000 over the years to local organizations. The weekend party attracts more than 60,000 guests who come to sample gourmet foods from more than 30 local restaurants, and to taste wines, cocktails and handcrafted beers. Live bands perform onstage throughout the event.

As the head-high waves crashed on the shore just off 10th Street, 10-year-old Lauren Castleton’s face was green. Was it because she had to run there from the Balboa Pier, a mile jog in the heavy sand under the July sun, or that she now had to charge into those waves and swim the mile back to the pier? No, Lauren’s face was green simply because she painted it that way, and she wasn’t alone. About 1,200 of her fellow junior lifeguards stepped into the water Thursday in all kinds of monstrous get-ups, from skull-painted faces or wrestling masks to pink hair with sparkles.

South Coast Plaza's Shu Uemura boutique will welcome artistic director and celebrity makeup artist Gina Brooke on Saturday for her first visit to the shop since it opened last year. Brooke, makeup artist for several years to pop singer Madonna, will offer beauty tips for summer, as well as personalized makeovers by appointment.
