For the 2009-10 school year, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is establishing a kindergarten- through-sixth-grade magnet school at Davis School. After 10 years or more of various groups asking for a charter school, a magnet school, or a similar type of program in Newport-Mesa, the school board thinks an alternative type of school open to anyone in the school district is needed. The voting booths in the school auditorium were packed during the lunchtime rush, but voters got in and out fast. With ballots turned in, "I voted" stickers in place and their democratic responsibilities complete, it was time for recess. "I feel like I am actually voting because they are doing the actual elections," said fifth-grader Asaph Sendrey, 10. FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this story had the wrong last name for Asaph Sendrey. Davis Magnet School's fourth-through sixth-grade students participated in their own election Tuesday as candidates ran for six student council positions.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Orange Revenge and Chick Magnets battled to a 1-1 tie Saturday in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action. Colton Dillion got the Chick Magnets on the scoreboard first with a goal off an assist by Patrick Suozzi. The Revenge tied the game with a goal by Mitchell Williams early in the second half. The Revenge's defense was led by Nick Taylor, Matt Langel, Ryan Kent, Charlie Long and Carson Carpenter. The Magnets used a goalie tandem of Nick Taylor and Taylor Otto, while the defense was anchored by Michael Pate, Jeremy Hyter, Ryan Brown, Taylor Stone, Geoff Machin, Daniel Kernan and Austin Harms.

The Chick Magnets defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action Saturday. Patrick Suozzi scored all three goals on assists by Taylor Otto, Austin Harms and Colton Dillion. Daniel Kernan and Geoff Machin also sparked the Chick Magnets' offense with crisp passes. On defense, Magnets' goalkeeper Nick Taylor delivered a shutout with numerous saves. He was helped on defense by the strong play of Michael Page, Taylor Stone, Tom Hutchinson and Jeremy Hyter.

Costa Mesa's only magnet school came together Wednesday morning to celebrate its founding principal on his last day of work. Davis Magnet School Principal Kevin Rafferty was honored for bringing Newport-Mesa Unified School District's science, math and technology-focused school to fruition and creating an environment of successful learning. The efforts helped boost the school's performance on standardized tests, the Academic Performance Index, by more than 200 points. API scores jumped 136 points the first year and climbed another 25 points the second and 43 points in the third.

Prospective Davis Magnet School students and their parents gathered Monday for one of their first looks at the new campus. Principal Kevin Rafferty, just three weeks into his new post, gave the parents an overview of the new school. It is set to open this fall as the Newport-Mesa Unified School District?s first science, math and technology magnet, on the campus of Davis Elementary School. The new magnet school is geared to serve all primary grade levels; construction is underway on a new kindergarten play area, which Rafferty called the largest he?

COSTA MESA — Davis Magnet School celebrated its recognition from the city for its learning garden by inviting students and parents to an event Friday morning at the Flag Deck. The K-6 math, technology and science magnet school was recognized by the Costa Mesa Planning Commission with a Mesa Green Design Award on April 11 — as were several local businesses — for successfully implementing green projects and practices. Planning Commissioner Jim Fitzpatrick presented the awards to Principal Kevin Rafferty, kindergarten teacher James Christman and "eco-mom" Lisa Manfredi, who were instrumental in getting the community garden up and running.
