UC Irvine Pregame Vs. Pepperdine Saturday 7 p.m. at Bren Events Center The Anteaters enter their only December home game at 5-4, before hitting the road for four straight games. Pepperdine (5-4) lost at Cal State Fullerton, 78-64, on Tuesday. UCI has won the last four games against Pepperdine in the Bren Center, including double-overtime wins in 2003 and 2001. The Waves have won the last two in Malibu, including 72-62 last season. UCI has four players averaging in double figures, led by senior guard Chris McNealy at 11.9 points per game.

MEN'S BASKETBALL UC Irvine 60, Hawaii 56 (OT) HONOLULU — The visiting Anteaters made nine of 12 free throws in overtime after missing seven of 10 in regulation to earn the Big West Conference win Thursday night. UCI (18-9, 9-2 in conference), scored the first four points of overtime and held on to avenge a 90-86 overtime loss to the Rainbow Warriors at Bren Events Center and retain sole possession of first in the Big West. Luke Nelson had 12 points to lead the winners, for which Mamadou Ndiaye, Will Davis and Chris McNealy had 11 points apiece.

The first Big West Conference regular-season men's basketball championship in 12 seasons produced multiple honors for Anteaters players, as well as Coach Russell Turner. Senior Chris McNealy earned first-team all-conference recognition, while 7-foot-6 freshman Mamadou Ndiaye was named Defensive Player of the Year, freshman guard Luke Nelson was the Freshman of the Year and Turner was Coach of the Year. In addition, Nelson was a second-team all-conference honoree and Ndiaye was a member of the All-Freshman team.

For the second straight game, the UC Irvine men's basketball team will attempt to pony up, when the Anteaters visit the SMU Mustangs in the first round of the NIT on Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT. UCI (23-11), the Big West Conference regular-season champion, is making its fifth appearance in the NIT after falling to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs, 61-58, in the semifinals of the Big West tournament on Friday at Honda Center. UCI has won twice in the NIT, both first-round triumphs over UCLA in 1986 and San Diego State in 1982.

RIVERSIDE - Just because UC Irvine men's basketball coach Russell Turner elected not to play starting big men Will Davis and Mamadou Ndiaye didn't mean the Anteaters gave anything less than their "Best" effort Saturday night. Mike Best, a 6-foot- 10 sophomore who along with 6-10 junior John Ryan replaced the aforementioned standouts in the starting lineup for the first time all season, had nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks to help the visiting Anteaters handle UC Riverside, 72-52, in a Big West Conference clash at the Student Recreation Center.

Legendary UC Irvine coach Ted Newland will be inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame April 5 at the Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center in Irvine. Newland, in his 39 years as UCI's men's water polo coach (1966-2004), amassed 714 victories and led the Anteaters to NCAA titles in 1970, 1982 and 1989. His '82 team went 30-0. A coach emeritus at UCI, Newland guided UCI to the final four of the NCAA Championship 21 times. Fifteen of his Anteater players competed on the U.S. Olympic team and 113 of his student-athletes earned All-American honors.

Long Beach State Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at Bren Events Center The UC Irvine men's basketball team is bidding for its fourth straight win over Long Beach State, which has captured the Big West Conference regular-season title the three previous seasons. Both teams enter Thursday's contest in a three-way tie for first place with UC Santa Barbara. UCI (14-9, 5-2 in conference) is ranked No. 22 in the CollegeInsider.com mid-major top-25 poll and has won nine of its last 13.
