After winning the Lincoln Regional by sweeping three games, keyed by season-best pitching performances from sophomore lefthander Danny Bibona and sophomore right-hander Bryce Stowell, the No. 8-ranked UC Irvine baseball team was back on the practice field Tuesday, preparing for a best-of-three Super Regional to begin Saturday at 3 p.m. at LSU. UCI All-American pitcher Scott Gorgen and Coach Mike Gillespie said they are still formulating their...

IRVINE - With a team more identified for determined defense and rebounding than putting on a offensive show, UC Irvine men's basketball coach Russell Turner is plenty entertaining in and of himself. Stalking the sideline, removing his jacket, scratching his head over his team's miscues, and exhorting - always exhorting his Anteaters - Turner, at least a couple times each half, outdoes players 20 years his junior, when it comes to expending energy. It wasn't exactly energy the host Anteaters lacked in a 66-60 nonconference loss to LSU on Tuesday.

The straight truth about the UC Irvine baseball team’s chances of winning the best-of-three Super Regional beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. at LSU might boil down to crooked numbers. Coach Paul Mainieri, whose Tigers (46-16-1) are the No. 7 seed, ranked No. 5 by Baseball America and on an NCAA-best 23-game winning streak, said the best way to combat UCI’s brand of baseball (pitching and small ball) is to produce consistently on offense. That has not been a problem thus far for the Tigers, who have bounced back to national prominence after a 29-26-1 season in 2007.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Much has been made of the 23-game winning streak that LSU (46-16-1) takes into the best-of-three baseball Super Regional with UC Irvine (41-16) that begins today at 3 p.m. UCI Coach Mike Gillespie said it’s not the streak that worries him so much as the confidence that streak has created. “They are really confident, they have to be, and that’s important,” Gillespie said from the dugout at Alex Box Stadium, where the No. 8-ranked Anteaters, winners of five straight and seven of their last eight, worked out Friday.

UCI’s baseball team fell way short of returning to the College World Series, losing, 21-7, to LSU in the third and deciding game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional on Monday. LSU (48-17-1), the national No. 7 seed, scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, chasing UCI starter Bryce Stowell. The Tigers also put seven runs across in the fifth. The Tigers hit seven home runs in the game, and Blake Dean went five for five with three runs batted in. A day earlier, LSU used a five-run ninth inning to defeat UCI in a heartbreaker, 9-7. The Anteaters entered the inning with a three-run cushion, but could not eliminate the Tigers.

There was a time when seeing its school logo on an ESPN telecast of the NCAA Regional pairings would spur a robust roar of excitement from UC Irvine baseball players. And while the postseason routine has lost a bit of its novelty for the Anteaters, who are making their fifth straight regional appearance and their sixth in the last seven years, there was some added emotion to go with the understated murmur Sunday that accompanied the discovery of this year's assignment in the Los Angeles Regional.

LOS ANGELES — LSU is no longer the equivalent of a four-letter word for the UC Irvine baseball program, which dispatched the defending national champion Tigers with a 4-3 victory in an elimination game of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win propelled the No. 21-ranked Anteaters (39-20) into the first of two must-win showdowns against host UCLA later Sunday night. Should UCI beat UCLA Sunday, the two teams would play Monday at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to a Super Regional.

LOS ANGLES — There was talk among UC Irvine players and coaches that the sore rib muscles that sidelined UCI senior All-American Danny Bibona for a month leading into the NCAA Los Angeles Regional was a blessing in disguise. And while Bibona's return was less than impressive in Friday's opening loss to LSU, there is a chance that the aforementioned "blessing" could still render dividends. UCI Coach Mike Gillespie announced after Saturday's 19-9 elimination-game win over Kent State that freshman Evan Brock will start Sunday's 2 p.m. game against LSU. Brock was inserted into the weekend rotation during Bibona's absence and used those three starts to not only solidify himself as a valued contributor, but also provide glimpses that he is a future star.

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine senior pitcher Eric Pettis is an All-American who has become known for his guts. But the LSU baseball team has now become notorious for ripping them out. For the second time in two seasons, the No. 23-ranked Tigers rallied in the late innings to deny Pettis, who has 40 career saves, the satisfaction of nailing down a monumental postseason win. LSU posted a two-out rally to tie the score in the bottom of the...

A common notion about community college transfers is that they take a year to make the adjustment to Division I baseball. And despite generating vastly different expectations upon arriving from their respective two-year programs, UC Irvine juniors Drew Hillman and Jon Hurst have just about proved that thinking to be true. Hillman was an All-American at Orange Coast College who had UCI coaches buzzing about his offensive prowess in the fall. Hurst, a two-time All-Orange Empire Conference performer at Cypress College, was a borderline washout after an underwhelming fall.

BATON ROUGE, La. — The UC Irvine baseball team had the place they call “The Box” in the ground, as well as its occupants, the LSU Tigers, with three outs remaining in what could have been the clinching game of the NCAA Super Regional. But the No. 8-ranked Anteaters, specifically normally reliable relievers Tom Calahan and Eric Pettis, the latter an All-American with a school single-season record 17 saves, couldn’t shovel dirt on the tenacious Tigers. The result was a ninth-inning comeback to rival any the 70-year-old facility — in its last season — has had, helping LSU (47-17-1)
