WALNUT — Another cause for celebration for the Newport Harbor High boys’ cross country team, but it took a backseat with one of its stars falling. Mike Puncel fell close to the finish line before the Sailors learned they finished in second place behind Loyola of Los Angeles in the CIF Southern Section Division II championships Saturday. The senior got back up after 20 or so seconds and eventually finished the three-mile race on the arduous Mt. San Antonio College course in Walnut.
Newport Harbor High swept the pool Sunday. The boys at home. The girls at a site three miles away. The two programs finished first at the California High School Water Polo Championships. The Sailors demonstrated they are frontrunners for CIF Southern Section Division I titles in the upcoming school year. The boys defeated Mater Dei, 8-3, in the final, whereas the girls beat Los Alamitos, 11-6, at Corona del Mar High. More tournament action is on tap for both programs.

Kekai Whitford, Sage Hill School's dynamic junior, has committed to play for the Loyola Marymount University women's volleyball team, said Billy Whitford, Kekai's father. Whitford led Sage Hill to its most successful season in the fall, when the program shared the Academy League title, claimed the CIF Southern Section Division 3A title, and advanced to the CIF State Southern California Regional Division III finals. Whitford, an outside hitter at Sage Hill, earned the CIF Southern Section Division 3A Player of the Year and Academy League MVP awards after she finished with 424 kills, 350 digs and 84 service aces.

Cody Caldwell joked that he now owns a jacket after making a recent trip to Chicago. He will definitely need it and other layers of clothing next winter. Caldwell said he signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play volleyball at Loyola University Chicago next year. Caldwell, a Newport Harbor High outside hitter, is one of a handful of local seniors signing on the first day of the NCAA signing period for winter and spring sports. NEWPORT BEACH — The Newport Harbor High boys' volleyball team gave Coach Dan Glenn exactly what he asked for Saturday night. But in a five-game CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal war against defending Division I champion Loyola, the host Sailors couldn't provide what Glenn ultimately wanted. The No. 3-seeded Cubs rallied for a 22-25, 29-27, 21-25, 25-22, 16-14 win to advance to Tuesday's semifinals at No. 2-seeded Corona del Mar. "I told our kids that all I can ask is for you guys to battle and we battled," Glenn said after a heart-wrenching fifth set in which the Sailors led, 8-4, and 14-11.

LOS ANGELES -- UC Irvine's women's basketball team fell to 6-3 on Saturday as a result of a 50-47 nonconference loss at Loyola Marymount. The Anteaters' Wendy Gabbe had 16 points, including four three-pointers, and Christina Callaway and Lisa Faulkner flirted with double figures (9 and 8 points, respectively), but were unable to offset the depth of Loyola Marymount, which had every player in the scoring column. Loyola's Adrianne Slaughter had a career-high effort on the boards with 17 rebounds, and Bianca Ziemann (six)
