IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Eric Deragisch went four for four, including a two-run home run in the fourth that broke a 5-5 tie, allowing the Anteaters to earn a 7-6 Big West Conference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Sunday. Then-No. 10-ranked UCI (16-7, 3-0 in conference) swept then-No. 19 Mustangs (17-7, 0-3). It’s the first time UCI has ever swept a three-game series to open conference play. Freshman DJ Crumlich had a three-run double in the third to break a 2-2 tie. Senior Brock Bardeen allowed one run on five hits in three relief innings to improve to 4-0, while junior All-American Eric Pettis fanned three in two shutout innings to record his seventh save.

UC Irvine women’s basketball coach Molly Goodenbour has completed her staff, adding Brianna Finch and Audi Spencer to join George Libbon, who was hired in August, as assistant coaches. Julia Smith has been named director of basketball operations for Goodenbour, who replaced Molly Tuter after guiding Chico State to a 52-11 record the previous two seasons. Libbon, who worked with Goodenbour at Chico State, has more than 25 years of coaching experience. He was athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. from 1991-2004, before coaching overseas.

RIVERSIDE — There has been little sense of security for the UC Irvine baseball team in recent weeks. If it’s not shaky defense that has kept Anteaters Coach Mike Gillespie on edge, it has been a listless offense and/or a less-than-reliable middle relief corps. So, when it came to securing a nonconference victory Tuesday night at UC Riverside, Gillespie wasn’t about to apologize for parlaying, among other things, some key bloop singles, a freshman walk-on reliever, and even a hidden-ball trick, into a 10-4 triumph.

IRVINE — Loyola Marymount Coach Frank Cruz demanded that his players show at least one stripe on their stirrups Tuesday, not realizing they’d show a few more in a commanding 11-3 nonconference win over host UC Irvine. The Lions, who came in on a three-game losing streak, had lost five of their last six and seven of their last nine. But, forced to comply with a uniform code that Cruz had let slide until this point, they produced 17 hits, the most this season against a UCI staff that came in second in the nation in earned-run average (2.84)
