The UC Irvine Anteaters women's tennis team lost to visiting Loyola Marymount, 4-3, Friday afternoon in nonconference play. The Anteaters swept doubles for a 1-0 lead, but Loyola Marymount came back with victories at No. 1 and 2 singles, as well as the 4-5 slots to drop UCI to 4-5 overall. Hui Leow and Anna Bentzer each won quickly in singles to give UCI a 3-0 lead before Loyola Marymount closed it out with four straight. The Anteaters return to the courts on Sunday at 1 p.m. against visiting Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Orange Empire Conference Individual Championships MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast College freshmen Brittany Bass and Brittnie Furuvald captured the doubles championship with a three-set victory Friday at Saddleback College. Top-seeded Bass and Furuvald defeated No. 2-seeded Caroline Houston and Jenny Vatelia of Riverside, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Houston and Vatelia had defeated Orange Coast’s Evelyn Wallace and Kalin Eshelman, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.

LOS ANGELES ? Jaime Martinez drove in five runs and Blair Erickson earned his 34th career save as UC Irvine topped Loyola Marymount, 10-5, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday. Martinez hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and added another in the seventh. Spike McDougall hit a home run in the sixth. Erickson pitched the final two innings for the save. With the save, the junior tied Chad Cordero for second place on the Big West Conference's all-time list. Gary Nakashima tossed three innings of one-hit ball for his first win of the season.

Pippa Saunders, a freshman at UC Berkeley, has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week in women's water polo. Saunders, a Corona del Mar High product, had four goals in No. 5-ranked Cal's 11-8 win at No. 11-ranked San Jose State on Saturday. She added a goal in a 12-4 win over No. 12-ranked Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Pippa's 11 goals lead all freshmen for Cal (15-5, 1-3 in conference). - From staff reports

IRVINE - Senior Chris Kirchwehm scored four goals and sophomore Garrett Gentry, a Corona del Mar High product, added three to lift seventh-ranked UC Irvine over No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 11-9, in nonconference action at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Thursday night. Kirchwehm and Gentry scored five of UCI's goals in the opening two periods. Kirchwehm scored his final goal of the night with 3:52 left for an 11-7 cushion. Junior goalie Doug Finfrock had 10 saves for the Anteaters (2-2)

Junior Garrett Gentry scored four goals and senior Jeff Powers added three to help lead the second-ranked UC Irvine men's water polo team to an 11-7 nonconference victory over host Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. The Anteaters (10-4) jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held a 7-4 advantage at halftime. UCI sophomore Dreason Barry added two goals in the win and senior goalie Doug Finfrock recorded eight saves. LMU (8-11), ranked No. 7, was led by Ryan Chapette with three goals.

Loyola men top UCI, claim tournament crown. FRESNO -- The Loyola Marymount men's soccer team broke a 1-1 first-half tie to earn a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine in the championship game of the Nike Goal Rush Classic at Fresno State. The Lions struck first on a goal by junior Pat Parker in the ninth minute. It was Parker's first goal of the season. UCI (2-1-1) drew even when junior midfielder Josh Murad tallied an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute, but it wasn't long before Loyola Marymount regained the lead.

LOGAN, Utah -- Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy collected five saves to record her first career shutout and junior midfielder Caroline Kabe converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute to propel visiting UC Irvine to a 1-0 Big West Conference triumph over Utah State Sunday. The victory was the second of the weekend for the Anteaters, who come away from their first two conference contests with a 5-5 record, 2-0 in the Big West. UCI knocked off host Idaho, 2-1, Friday.
