The Corona del Mar High football team shined defensively in its 26-0 victory over Los Amigos in a CIF Southern Section Southern Division quarterfinal game at Bolsa Grande High. The top-seeded Sea Kings, the defending CIF champions who play Woodbridge in the semifinals Friday night at Irvine High, allowed the Lobos to get into the red zone just once all game. It happened on Los Amigos' second drive of the game. But on third-and-seven at the CdM nine-yard line, the snap was fumbled and CdM sophomore Hoyt Crance recovered the ball.

GARDEN GROVE - "Chase the ring" is the chant for the Corona del Mar High football team as the players exit their postgame huddle. The Sea Kings are now just a game away from playing for their second straight ring. They withstood an inspired effort from Los Amigos in the first half of Friday night's CIF Southern Section Southern Division quarterfinal playoff game. In the second half, CdM looked like the top-seeded defending champion that it is. The Sea Kings pulled away, blanking the Lobos, 26-0, at Bolsa Grande High.

COSTA MESA - By the time the Estancia High football team finally got in the end zone Friday night at Jim Scott Stadium, the home fans were more than a little restless. After senior quarterback Brad Wilson ran in the conversion run, those fans did not see the Eagles' tally on the scoreboard change from six to eight points. They yelled to the scoreboard operator to change the points. He had done so, but nobody could see the change, as some of the lights on the scoreboard are apparently burned out. It didn't really matter.

COSTA MESA - At one point in the first half Thursday night, Costa Mesa High football coach Wally Grant said he ran the same running play 18 times in a row. No, Grant was not playing the Madden video game. He was coaching the Mustangs against a tough opponent in Los Amigos. But when you have two talented running backs and a tough offensive line, that strategy can be successful. Costa Mesa used big nights from junior Oronde Crenshaw and senior Justin Smith to secure a big 40-14 nonleague victory over the Lobos at Orange Coast College.
