With two balls, two strikes and two outs in a 2-2 game, the deuces truly were wild for Fountain Valley High baseball senior Daniel Patzlaff on Friday afternoon. Patzlaff, who wears jersey No. 2 for the Barons, saw a pitch he liked in the top of the fourth inning. It was down and in, but he managed to hit it out to right field. The two-run home run was — you guessed it — Patzlaff's second round-tripper of the season. And it helped the Sunset League-leading Barons earn their second win over Newport Harbor in three days, 4-2, at the Sailors' field.

Early in the season, adversity struck the Newport Harbor High boys' lacrosse team. During the first five games, the Sailors lost a starter to injury each contest, Coach Mark Todd said. There were some broken collarbones to some players, Todd said, as well as a broken hand to talented freshman midfielder Chandler Pierce, who was lost for the season. It all became challenging for the Sailors, who stumbled early in the Sunset League season as well, as some players recovered from injury and others left for spring-break trips.

LOS ALAMITOS - Almost a week went by since the last time the Newport Harbor High boys' basketball team played a game. Would a delay hurt? The Sailors stood around and waited for Friday's tip. The start time to the Sunset League game at Los Alamitos ran 25 minutes behind schedule. The Sailors hung around near one of the locker rooms and Coach Bob Torribio looked on from the side of the court. "They got the Zamboni guy," Torribio said, referring to the man buffing the court while riding a machine.
