NEWPORT BEACH - With the regular season coming to end next week, Coach Robert Lynn said he never envisioned his first year at Newport Harbor to play out this way. Through 19 boys' water polo games, the Sailors are nearly flawless, as they have only suffered one setback. They took a step toward closing out Sunset League play with a perfect record. Newport Harbor clinched at least a share of the league title with a 7-3 victory against Los Alamitos on Wednesday. One league match remains and the Sailors are more than likely to claim their third straight undefeated league crown.

Coach Kristen Case makes sure that her players rarely leave a Newport Harbor High girls' tennis match without a smile on their face. This was provided Tuesday, as the Sailors sang "Happy Birthday" to their teammate Claudia Davis, a junior who was turning 17. They ate cookies to celebrate. In terms of tennis, there simply wasn't too much to say. Visiting Los Alamitos got almost as many sets as Davis now has years. The Griffins posted a dominant 16-2 victory, their second Sunset League victory over the Sailors this season.

Rick Devereux Football at Estancia High has suffered some pretty lean years following the departure of Dave Perkins as head coach following the 2000 season. The Eagles have gone 8-31 in the four seasons since Perkins left, including a 1-9 year and an 0-9 campaign. But momentum has shifted slightly as Craig Fertig had Estancia playing hard with discipline on the field and in the classroom the last two seasons. Newly hired Coach Brian Barnes wanted to take the momentum created and build a winning program during recent spring football practices.

NEWPORT BEACH — The atmosphere was electric at the Sunset League water polo showcase Wednesday night at Newport Harbor High. The best game, Newport Harbor against Los Alamitos, was saved for last. A line formed at the pool gate as the 7:10 p.m. start time approached, turning the crowd standing-room only. By the end of the game, even some of those who had seats rose up to applaud the Sailors. Newport Harbor came out strong and didn't let up, and now the team's grasp on the league title appears to be just as strong.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - With a handful of matches going the distance, this weekend resembled a roller coaster ride for the Corona del Mar High girls' volleyball team. The ride still was a long one, as the Sea Kings won their first four matches and advanced to the Division 1 championship quarterfinals at the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament. It took the top-ranked team in the state to end it. Los Alamitos rallied to top CdM, 20-25, 25-10, 15-7, in a quarterfinal match Saturday at Edison High.

LONG BEACH - Los Alamitos High girls' tennis coach Kevin Garrett talked about wanting his team to play the best teams Southern California has to offer. He said the Griffins have already played matches against Dana Hills and University, and have Peninsula coming up. Those are three of the top four teams in CIF Southern Section Division 1. In the Sunset League, Los Alamitos might not be tested like in those matches. It sure looked that way Thursday. The Griffins blitzed Newport Harbor, 15-3, at El Dorado Tennis Center, handing the Sailors their first league loss since 2009.

That was to be decided in the pool, where Newport Harbor High faced Los Alamitos. A day after a tough loss, the Sailors sure showed they could bounce back. Newport Harbor hung on for an 8-7 victory over Los Al in the league opener Wednesday night at Ocean View High. The Sailors (9-2) jumped ahead in their quest for their third straight league title.

NEWPORT BEACH — Sometimes the mentality of a champion is revealed in a dramatic come-from-behind victory. But if one looks closely enough, the same fighting spirit can be seen against odds that prove insurmountable. The Newport Harbor High baseball team experienced both scenarios in two Sunset League games this week, the latter a 13-3 home loss to Los Alamitos Friday. The setback was the first of the season for the Sailors (9-1, 2-1 in league), who led, 1-0, into the third and trailed only 4-1 after five innings against the Griffins (6-4, 2-1)

LOS ALAMITOS - Almost a week went by since the last time the Newport Harbor High boys' basketball team played a game. Would a delay hurt? The Sailors stood around and waited for Friday's tip. The start time to the Sunset League game at Los Alamitos ran 25 minutes behind schedule. The Sailors hung around near one of the locker rooms and Coach Bob Torribio looked on from the side of the court. "They got the Zamboni guy," Torribio said, referring to the man buffing the court while riding a machine.

Whenever Newport Harbor High and Los Alamitos meet on a football field, the game always seems to go down to the wire. Sometimes four quarters isn't enough to decide a winner. For the second straight year, the Sailors and Griffins went into overtime. They closed out Sunset League play last year in overtime. This year, they opened league with overtime. Either way, Newport Harbor has a knack for outlasting Los Alamitos in the close games. The Sailors rallied for a 27-24 victory in overtime on Thursday night at Davidson Field, handing the Griffins their first setback of the season.

It is difficult to show more team spirit than the Newport Harbor High girls' tennis team. "Our team has always been very spirited," Coach Kristen Case said. "I mean, even when I played here, we were ridiculously spirited. I guess you would say it's one of our trademarks. " Visiting Edison tried to match the Sailors on Tuesday afternoon. Players from both squads were constantly yelling out to teammates in support. On the court, however, Newport Harbor was just a little bit better in the key Sunset League match.

LOS ALAMITOS — The Newport Harbor High girls' swim team came into Tuesday's Sunset League meet at Los Alamitos High with a plan. But as the meet progressed, the Sailors saw a Griffins team that was a little bit deeper. Newport Harbor Coach Brian Melstrom said the Griffins have 57 girls in their program, while Newport Harbor has 35. The Los Al girls were maybe even a little bit more physically imposing. "They're tall," Melstrom said during the meet. "They're all two, three inches taller than our girls.

CORONA DEL MAR — The coach may be new for the Corona del Mar High boys' tennis team, but the French fry rule is still in effect. It's a longtime program tradition for the Sea Kings. After a match in which just one player loses sets, that player is required to bring French fries for the whole team to practice the next day. On Wednesday it was the sophomore transfer from Oregon, Ryan Andrews, who lost twice to visiting Los Alamitos, understandable as the Griffins have a tough singles lineup.

NEWPORT BEACH - The low shot from Los Alamitos High senior Stephanie Mutafyan came in at lightning speed, forcing Newport Harbor junior goalkeeper Cleo Harrington to react quickly. It was a reaction that stunned Los Alamitos girls' water polo coach Dave Carlson in the third quarter Wednesday night. Harrington somehow dropped her hands in time to stuff the shot from about five meters. Another junior also would step up in the showdown for the Sunset League title. Christina O'Beck led all players with three goals as the Sailors held on for a 7-5 victory over the Griffins at Newport Harbor High.

CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team saw any chance for momentum heading into the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs slipping away. The Sea Kings trailed Los Alamitos by three goals late in the first half of Friday night's Irvine Southern California Championships quarterfinal at CdM. But they responded with a second half that might be a springboard to bigger and better things. They might have been the most important 14 minutes of the season so far for CdM. The hosts dominated those final 14 minutes, on their way to a 10-8 comeback victory over the Griffins.
