MEN'S SOCCER Vanguard 7, William Jessup 0 COSTA MESA — Senior Brian Siemonsma and junior Kyle O'Brien had two goals apiece to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Thursday. Vanguard, ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll, earned its first win after opening 0-2. Senior Jack Plummer had two assists and one goal, while William Pellow added a goal and an assist. Vanguard posted a 41-0 edge in shots. William Jessup is 1-1.

Lions stunned, 2-1 COSTA MESA — William Pellow scored to give Vanguard the lead in the fourth minute, but visiting La Sierra rallied to tie, then scored the game-winner in the 89th minute for a 2-1 nonconference victory in the men's soccer season opener for both on Wednesday. Sam Nichlson and Jack Plummer were each credited with an assist for No. 4-ranked Vanguard.

The Fairmont Newport Beach hotel added a new member to its hospitality family last week: Sunny the Sea Lion. Sunny, a smiley marine mammal with a penchant for sunglasses and surfer shirts, is the new face of the hotel's children's program. He's also the catalyst for the hotel's new support of local sea lion rescue efforts. "We wanted to paint the picture to our guests that we are authentically connected to the beach," said Rei Strand, the hotel's public relations and marketing coordinator.

Summer traditions from funnel cakes to carnival rides are in full swing this weekend at the 64th annual Lions Fish Fry & Carnival. Families filled Costa Mesa's Lions Park on Saturday for the fundraiser, which included the famous $10 fish dinner, raffles, live music and games. Mike Scheafer, Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club board member and Fish Fry chairman, said 10,000 to 15,000 people were expected over the course of the weekend event, which continues Sunday. "This is the biggest community event in Costa Mesa," Scheafer said.

Maybe it's the super-secret ingredient in the fish batter, but something keeps locals coming back year after year — 64 years to date. The annual Lions Fish Fry & Carnival is set for this weekend, so club members are busy wrangling thousands of pounds of potatoes, fish and cole slaw into place. Organizers try to walk a tightrope between tradition and change. "There are a lot of new carnival rides, and we've got a lot of really good entertainment on the stage," Costa Mesa native and Lions Club board member Mike Scheafer said.

MEN'S TENNIS Fresno Pacific 6, Vanguard 1 MOBILE, Ala. — The Lions' season ended in the NAIA Tournament quarterfinal match Thursday. Vanguard's Yahor Kryvaruchka and Samdro Bucher won the Lions' lone set, defeating Fresno Pacific's Cledson Carvalho and Jaime Canamares, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. But top-seeded Fresno Pacific (23-2) won the other two doubles sets, earning the point, and clinched the match after winning the first five singles sets. Vanguard, which was unseeded but upset No. 8 Xavier (La.)

Vanguard (9-13) will play against top-seeded Fresno Pacific Thursday. Lucas Pereira and Alexandre Piccin won at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, and Yahor Kryvaruchka and Samdro Bucher won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. MEN'S TENNIS Vanguard 9, Mobile 0 MOBILE, Ala. — Yahor Kryvaruchka led the Lions with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles in the first round of the NAIA National Championship Tuesday. Samdro Bucher (No. 2), Robin Wagner (No. 3), Alexandre Piccin (No. 4), Radek Rosiak (No. 5) and Garrett Gillon (No. 6) also won in singles for Vanguard (8-13). Kryvaruchka and Bucher scored a big 9-7 win in doubles, where VU swept too. The Lions play against Xavier in the second round Wednesday.
