KANSAS CITY — Preston Wynne stepped up to deliver what can be described as the Vanguard University men's basketball team's biggest win in its history. He scored a career-high 42 points to lead the Lions past Saint Gregory, 108-88, to give Vanguard a chance at even a bigger win. The Lions will play for the NAIA Division I National Championship Tuesday at 5 p.m. PT against Emmanuel. Wynne connected on 14 of his 19 shots (73.6%), and hit six of nine from three-point range. "Tonight was a great team performance," Wynne said in a press release.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vanguard University is no longer just a women's basketball power. The Costa Mesa school's men's team defeated defending NAIA champion Georgetown of Kentucky, 93-85, on Friday to reach the NAIA Division I Final Four. The Lions (30-6) will meet St. Gregory's of Oklahoma (24-9) in the semifinals on Monday at 2 p.m. PT at Municipal Auditorium. No. 6-seeded Vanguard had not advanced past the second round in its two previous NAIA Tournament appearances. But Coach Rhett Soliday's squad, which claimed the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, has won seven in a row, including three straight in Kansas City, and is the highest seeded team remaining in the 32-team tournament.

FRANKFURT, Ky. — There were only 13 combined free throws in the game, but the last one decided the outcome with two seconds left as John Brown of Arkansas upset Vanguard, 62-61, in the second round of the NAIA women's basketball tournament on Friday at the Frankfurt Civic Center. Vanguard senior Taylor Belmont converted a three-point play with 1:13 left and sophomore Samantha Doucette hit a three-pointer to pull the Lions, ranked No. 1 all season, even with 29 seconds remaining.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Vanguard University men's basketball team made history on two fronts Friday by defeating Benedictine of Kansas, 81-70, in the second round of the NAIA Tournament at Municipal Arena. Junior DeAngelo Jones had 25 points and senior Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Preston Wynne added 20 to help the No. 6-seeded Lions (29-6) advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Vanguard, which set a school record for wins with 29 and had never before advanced past the second round, will face defending national champion Georgetown of Kentucky (24-10)

FRANKFURT, Ky. — Vanguard University senior women's basketball standout Nicole Ballestero loves shooting down Cougars. The Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year, who earned NAIA All-American honors last season, scored 38 points to lead the Lions to a 97-47 first-round win over Cal State San Marcos in the first round of the NAIA Tournament on Thursday. Vanguard advances to face John Brown of Arkansas (26-7) in Friday's second round at 6:45 p.m. PT. John Brown defeated Lyon of Arkansas, 70-53, in the first round on Thursday.

Vanguard University Pregame Vs. Benedictine College of Kansas Friday at 4:15 p.m. PT at Kansas City, Mo. The Vanguard University men's basketball team will try to add to a historic season when it faces Benedictine in the second round of the NAIA Tournament on Friday at 4:15 PT in Municipal Arena in Kansas City, Mo. The Lions (28-6) have tied the 1988-89 team for the school record for most wins in a single season and captured the program's first Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament crown after collecting its third GSAC regular-season title.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior Keith Mason had a career-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds, while senior Preston Wynne produced 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Vanguard University men's basketball team to a 103-94 victory over Life University of Georgia in the first round of the NAIA Tournament on Wednesday. Vanguard (28-6) matched the 1989-90 Lions for most single-season wins in program history, surpassing its previous single-game scoring best of 101 points this season in the opener against Cal Tech.

The Vanguard University men's basketball team made history Tuesday night, capturing its first Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament title with a pulsating 90-80 win over visiting Hope International. Senior guard Preston Wynne, the GSAC Most Valuable Player, scored 24 points, including two crowd-revving three-pointers midway through the second half, to help the GSAC champion Lions, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, improve to 27-6. Vanguard, which won its third GSAC regular-season title this season, advances to the NAIA Tournament for the first time since 2006.

The greatest individual scoring performance in the long and distinguished history of the Vanguard University women's basketball program became something of a footnote Friday night. Despite a school-record 53 points from senior All-American and Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Nicole Ballestero, the top-ranked Lions were upset, 80-76, by No. 17-ranked Hope International in the semifinals of the GSAC Tournament at Vanguard. The Royals, who were edged by Vanguard, 80-79, at home on Feb. 22 for the closest call the Lions had during their previously unbeaten season, had the final surge in a game that featured 12 lead changes and eight ties.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 80, San Diego Christian 71 DeAngelo Jones stepped up to score 22 points for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday at the Pit. Chris Gorman added 14 points, while Keith Mason and Zach Allmon finished with 12 points each for No. 9-ranked Vanguard (25-6), which plays host to Westmont Saturday in a semifinal game. San Diego Christian dropped to 8-16.
