Cecil Whiteside, a former Newport Harbor High standout, has been kicked off the football team at Cal for violating team rules, Coach Jeff Tedford announced Thursday. Tedford did not specify what the linebacker did, according to the Associated Press and the San Francisco Chronicle. Whiteside was regarded as one of Tedford's most talented defensive players, the Chronicle reported. As a freshman, he played in 10 games and started three for the Bears. He recorded 17 total tackles, four for losses.

Corona del Mar High senior linebacker James Christian's high school football career ended after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the second game of the season, but his playing days don't appear to be over. Christian has been asked to be a walk-on player at UCLA, CdM Coach Scott Meyer said Wednesday. Christian injured his left knee on the third defensive play of the game against Western. Meyer had big plans for Christian, a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder who was playing football for the first time since he was a freshman.

In agony, Tyler Thomas asked his dad for one thing before he took him to the hospital eight weeks ago. "I wanted In-N-Out [Burger]," says Thomas, who soon found out he would be out of the lineup for the Estancia High football team. Thomas learned the pain from that night on Sept. 20 was due to injuries he suffered on the field while playing at Irvine High. Irvine is where Christopher Thomas, Tyler's father, played football. He watched his alma mater take down Estancia, 40-6, and his son. The young Thomas says he dislocated his left shoulder and fractured his collarbone.

*This post has been corrected The way Coach Scott Meyer describes two of his linebackers you begin to think he is talking about the same player. "Really smart, really good at communicating, really active, and really good at football," Meyer says of Hoyt Crance and Hugh Crance. Hoyt and Hugh also happen to be fraternal twin brothers. They play right next to each other on Corona del Mar High's defense, Hoyt in the middle and Hugh at outside. They go to school together, Hugh drives and Hoyt sits shotgun because Hugh has a parking pass near the pool.

Sage Hill School football coach J.R. Tolver says there aren't many teenage boys from San Juan Capistrano like Will Burns. Those kids, he says, tend to stay home and play for rival St. Margaret's or another south county school. Tolver lucked out with the Burns family. He has two Burns boys, Will and Zach, playing for him this year. The oldest is Will and he's making plays for the Lightning as a senior. Burns gets to play near his house on Friday, when Sage Hill travels to St. Margaret's for an Academy League opener.
