Richard Dunn When Bill Wakeman arrived at Newport Harbor High 30 years ago, the climate, so typical of Newport Beach, was perfect for sailing. "I came along at the right time, when high school sailing was becoming a real sport. It was in its absolute infancy," said Wakeman, who grew up sailing the waters off Newport Beach and describes his passion "like a really fast-moving chess game, where all the pieces are moving and the game keeps changing. It's a highly cerebral sport."

A high level of spirited camaraderie was displayed by the fraternity of local neighbors who gather to toast life and to raise a few dollars to help kids in need. "The money goes to Toys For Tots at the holidays," said John Wortmann, president of the Lido Isle Community Association and major booster of the men's club.

The Orange County Health Care Agency posted warnings at two Newport Beach recreational areas because of high bacteria levels. Signs warning swimmers and other beachgoers to avoid the water were placed at the beach in front of the Lido Isle Yacht Club and at the Grand Canal on Balboa Island. Three other areas in Newport Beach also have postings -- Harbor Patrol Beach and Newport Slough at Grant and Lancaster streets. The postings will remain in effect until the agency collects samples that show permitted levels.
