Beginning today, neighbors of a proposed Mormon Temple will have a visual aid to understanding what it will be like to live with a 124-foot building and steeple. At about noon, a crane will go up at 2300 Bonita Canyon Drive, the site of a proposed 17,500-square-foot temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. An aircraft warning light on top of the steeple will stand in for a lighted statue of the Angel Moroni. Posts in the ground surrounded the crane will show the location and height of the temple walls.

A new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can only be a positive factor for the city of Newport Beach and other Orange County communities. All current temples are beautiful edifices that enhance their surroundings and provide a feeling of peace to all those who view them. I too am ecstatic about this new temple. Although we are fortunate to be within driving distance of both the Los Angeles temple and the San Diego temple, to have access to these blessings only minutes away, is a dream come true.

NEWPORT BEACH -- The announcement came Friday. All that's left for members of the Newport Beach Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to do is obtain the right permits from the city, announce a site, determine a groundbreaking date and form committees to spread the word that the first Mormon temple in Orange County will be built in the city. In other words, they have a lot to do, said Robert Wynn, the city's former city manager and a member of the Newport Beach stake.

Young Chang For two years, Tim Nelson lived among Ukrainians suffering from poverty. They ate watered-down soup, beets, cabbages and potatoes. Kids in orphanages were shabbily dressed in the winter. Cracked windows let the air in, and uncarpeted floors froze children's feet. Nelson has been back from his Christian mission trip for more than a year now, but these images haven't faded. Of course, he remembers sunny summer days, pretty spring flowers and a winter sky that didn't look so bleak once he adjusted to his new environment.
