Dennis Rodman pleads not guilty Dennis Rodman pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of drunk driving, reckless driving and obstruction of justice after a motorcycle accident outside a Las Vegas strip club in October. The West Newport resident did not appear in Las Vegas Municipal Court. His attorney, Karen Winckler, entered the plea on his behalf. The 42-year-old Rodman, who is trying to make a comeback to the NBA by playing with the Long Beach Jam of the American Basketball Assn.

A man Newport Beach police suspect who stole more than $1 million in a string of high-profile burglaries was arrested in Nevada after he led Las Vegas police on a high-speed chase in a red Ford Mustang convertible, authorities said Thursday. Nevada law enforcement officers arrested Richard William Abbott, 45, on Wednesday night on the I-15 Freeway heading out of Las Vegas after he sped away from a police officer who spotted his GT500 convertible with a black top in the casino district of the city, Las Vegas Officer Barbara Morgan said.

Canaletto Ristorante Veneto, a high-end Italian restaurant in Las Vegas, has announced plans to open its second location in Fashion Island next fall. The restaurant, led by executive chef Maurizio Mazzon, features an extensive menu of Venetian-style foods and wines. The first Canaletto, which belongs to the Il Fornaio restaurant and bakery group, resides at the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas and is renowned for its bread, risotto and seafood. “The combination of Maurizio Mazzon’s personal attention and Il Fornaio’s strong organization will produce a well-run restaurant with personality and attention to detail,” Keith Eyrich, the Irvine Co.’s president of retail properties, stated in a release.

LAS VEGAS — The Newport-Beach based Slammers under-18 girls' team won a thriller, while two other girls' teams captured meaningful victories to advance to today's finals at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far Western Regionals. The Slammers under-18 squad defeated Real Colorado National in overtime, 1-0. The Slammers include Taylor Fallon, a Corona del Mar High product, and Jackie Venke, who is originally from Newport Beach, and attended Mater Dei. They will face the Mustang Blast, of Northern California, today.

Patrick Sanders, who led UC Irvine in scoring as a senior this past season, is on the Sacramento Kings’ roster for the NBA Summer League that starts this weekend in Las Vegas. The 6-foot-6 Sanders is one of 17 players on the roster. The team practices Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Sacramento before leaving for Las Vegas. Sacramento plays the first of its five games Saturday against Toronto at 1 p.m. at Cox Pavilion. All five games will be webcast on NBA.com and three games will also be televised on NBA TV. Sanders averaged 15.1 points for the Anteaters and was named first-team All-Big West Conference in 2007-08.

The Estancia High boys volleyball team finished 23rd at the 60-team Chaparral Tournament, contested Monday and Tuesday in Las Vegas. The Eagles won their four-team pool, sweeping Cholla of Arizona, as well as Servite and Eldorado in the best-of-three format, with rally scoring to 25 (Nevada rules). The Eagles played 21 games in two days at four sites. They also defeated Las-Vegas-based Silverado, 25-23, 25-15, Monday. They opened Tuesday's play by being swept in their four-team pool, which included Downey, North Torrance and Fresno-based Buchannan, which eventually claimed the tournament title.

Paul Clinton Two people remained hospitalized Tuesday following a Labor Day accident in which an 87-year-old woman injured 13 pedestrians when she ran her sedan into a crowd. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred at 12:51 p.m. Monday when Newport Beach resident Mary Nash accelerated and lost control of her Volvo sedan. But police now believe that the car was functioning properly, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.

Titus Hasson talked to his father last week, after his football game at Newport Harbor High. Hasson gave him his stats, 110 yards and two touchdowns as a running back and two interceptions as a safety. Anthony Hasson told his son he was proud of his overall performance on the field. "He said he's my No. 1 fan," said Hasson, a senior. Hasson's top supporter has never seen him play in high school. Hasson said his father is in jail. Anthony has been, Hasson said, since Hasson entered seventh grade.
