COSTA MESA — Signe Margit, 59, of Laguna Hills has been identified as the woman whose mummified remains were found in the passenger seat of a car last week in Costa Mesa. The corpse, covered in a pile of clothing, apparently had been driven around for up to 10 months, police said. Margit's identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, police Sgt. Phil Myers said. She had been reported as a missing person when she stoped contacting her family in December 2009, according to police.

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High cross country coach Bill Sumner can't tell a certain story about Ashlee Powers without laughing. It's a giddy laugh for sure. Last month during the CdM boys' and girls' training at Mammoth, Powers was struggling as she competed in a push-up contest. She was behind the winner by 15 push-ups, Sumner said. The CdM junior appeared spent and ready to fall on her belly. But slowly, one push-up after the next she caught up to the person in first place and after one more push-up to win, she stopped.

It's one of the tidiest stretches of road in Newport Beach. On one end, Mercedes-Benz hoods gleam in the Fletcher Jones Motorcars lot. On the other, a gated condo development looms from behind tall palms. Jamboree Road, with its wide lanes, absence of retail development and speeding cars, is one of the last places you'd expect to see someone hanging out on the corner. Especially if that man is homeless. For the past month or so, Nate Meador, 50, has been leaning against Jamboree lampposts between MacArthur Boulevard and Coast Highway.

IRVINE — Brian Hurst started his Friday thinking of Corona del Mar High's must-win Pacific Coast League playoff game. Lose and the Sea Kings miss the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs. When the baseball team hopped on the bus after class, the senior learned of a new assignment. Hurst wasn't playing second base. He was taking the mound. The last time Hurst pitched was on April 6. Hurst couldn't remember if he pitched in league this season. He had not, nor had he started a game with the ball in his hand.
