WRESTLING LAGUNA HILLS — Newport Harbor High senior heavyweight Brian Beaudette lost, 10-5, to Panos Papadopoulos of Los Alamitos in the Orange County All-Star match Monday at Laguna Hills High. The meet featured the top two in the county rankings at each weight class. Beaudette lost to Papadopoulos in mid-December, 10-3. They square off again in Thursday's Sunset League dual meet. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Sage Hill 47, Capistrano Valley Christian 42 NEWPORT COAST — Sophomore Stephanie Garrison had 16 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs, to lead the Lightning in the Academy League game Saturday.

Newport Harbor High senior Kid Lim finished second in the 119-pound class Saturday at the Sea View League wrestling finals to advance to the CIF Southern Section Coastal Division championships, beginning Feb. 20 at Westminster High. Lim (22-7) was pinned by Sonny Siegal from Laguna Hills in the title match at Laguna Hills High. Newport Harbor freshman Jessee Marshall (145), as well as Sailor junior Mike Ortiz (189) both finished fourth to earn alternate status for the CIF finals.

SAN CLEMENTE — Corona del Mar High scored the final six goals to claim an 8-4 victory over Los Alamitos in the semifinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I Championships Saturday at San Clemente High. The win allows the top-seeded Sea Kings (19-2) to advance to the title match against No. 2-seeded Foothill, Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. at Laguna Hills High. Foothill defeated CdM, 10-8, in last year’s title match to claim its third straight Southern Section title.

NEWPORT BEACH - Laguna Hills High senior and UCLA-bound Dan Miltenberger won a pitching duel against Newport Harbor's Ryan Torrey as the Hawks edged the host Sailors, 2-1, in a Sea View League baseball game Wednesday. Miltenberger struck out nine and tossed a two-hitter as Laguna Hills remained undefeated in six Sea View games. The Hawks scored twice in the fifth to break a scoreless tie, then Harbor (4-11, 0-7 in league) rallied for a run in the bottom half of the inning, but left runners on second and third with nobody out. In the seventh, the Sailors loaded the bases with two outs, but Miltenberger coaxed the final hitter into a game-ending groundout.

Megan Aaker, Kristen Thawley, Joanna Usher and Lauren Yadon signed national letters of intent to play women's basketball for UC Irvine, Coach Mark Adams announced Wednesday. Aaker is a 5-foot-11 guard from Laguna Hills High who averaged 18.1 points per game along with 6.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a junior. She was a second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division II-AA selection and the 2000 Division IIA CIF Player of the Year. Thawley, a 6-0 forward from Irvine High, averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds as a junior and was a first-team all-county selection.

The visiting Corona del Mar High frosh/soph boys water polo team defeated Laguna Beach, 10-8, and clinched the Pacific Coast League title last Wednesday in both teams' league finale. GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY Laguna Hills Invitational LAGUNA HILLS - Corona del Mar High freshman Raquel Powers won the freshman Division III race as the Sea Kings earned team titles in the freshman, sophomore and junior races on Saturday at Laguna Hills High. Powers completed the three-mile course in 19 minutes, 20 seconds. LAGUNA HILLS - The break the Newport Harbor High baseball team has been waiting for to break their Sea View League losing streak did not materialize Monday in a 5-0 loss at Laguna Hills High. The win improved the host's league winning streak to 10 this season, while dropping the Sailors (4-15) to 0-11 against Sea View foes. The Sailors played the Hawks even into the fourth inning, when a two-out error allowed Laguna Hills to take a 1-0 lead. The unearned run came after the Sailors had runners at the corners with no outs in the top of the inning.

Newport Harbor High senior Jon Vandersloot, who earned second-team honors, is the lone Sailor among the coaches' All-Sea View League baseball selections. Vandersloot, who played outfield and third base, had 10 of his 22 hits against Sea View pitching. Vandersloot's hit totals, both league and overall, tied for tops on the team. Vandersloot, who hit a team-best .290 for the season, had five RBIs, two stolen bases and a pair of triples. Laguna Hills High senior Daniel Miltenberger is the league's Most Valuable Player.

The principal at Laguna Hills High School will take the top job at Newport Harbor High School, schools officials said Wednesday. Sean Boulton will become principal at Harbor, pending final school board approval, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District announced. "Newport Harbor High School is one of those rare places where history, community and educational excellence come together," Boulton said in a news release. "I cannot wait to meet students, teachers, parents and members of the educational community.

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High proved this regular season and the last one that it can beat Foothill in boys' lacrosse. When it comes to the big game in Orange County, that's a different story. The top tag in the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I playoffs usually belongs to the Knights. That's how it played out for the fourth straight time Tuesday night. The Sea Kings earned the top seed for the second straight season, and for the second time, they fell to No. 2. The Knights won their fourth consecutive county crown, beating CdM, 14-11, in front of 2,633 fans at Laguna Hills High.

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High senior Jaycee Olsen won the shot put and discus and finished second in the 200 meters to help the Sea Kings girls’ track and field team to the Pacific Coast League title Friday at Laguna Hills High. Melanie Powers won the 1,600 and 3,200, while Lelia Pozin won the 300 hurdles. Times and marks were not available. Marisa Cummings, Ali Hummelberg and Sarah Keddington followed in succession behind Powers in the 1,600, while Cummings and Hummelberg went 2-3 in the 3,200.

LAGUNA HILLS — Fernando Orozco stood by the medal table, slapping hands with finishers Saturday at the 25th annual Laguna Hills Invitational cross country meet. As he did so, the Estancia High senior caught his breath. Orozco had earned the break, since nobody could keep up with him in the Division III senior boys’ race on the three-mile course at Laguna Hills High. Orozco finished in first in a personal-record time of 15 minutes, 29 seconds, over five seconds ahead of the second-place runner, highlighting Newport-Mesa finishers in the meet that divides races by class and division.

COSTA MESA — She didn’t seem nearly as menacing when the Sailors faced her during summer league play, but Laguna Hills High forward Lauren Engeln made life tough for Newport Harbor Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore sensation had 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Hawks (7-5) to a 60-21 win over a sputtering Newport Harbor team. As a freshman, Engeln averaged 11 points per game and was selected as the Player of the Year in CIF Southern Section Division IV-A . It didn’t help that Newport Harbor (3-8)
