The Board of Directors of Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce has announced that the position of executive director, previously filled by Verlaine Crawford, has been vacated. "We wish her well in her future endeavors," said President Dennis Junka. Board member Rose Hancock, who operates the Manzanita Cottages, has agreed to take the position of interim executive director. The executive committee has begun an aggressive search for a new executive director.

Marisa O'Neil Fire season begins Monday, and fire officials have announced the closure of fire-prone areas, including some in Newport Beach. The area south of Bonita Canyon Drive, Sand Canyon Avenue and the San Diego Freeway down to Coast Highway between Laguna Canyon Road and Buck Gully will be closed starting at 8 a.m. Monday. The closure, encompassing one of many wildland areas countywide, is designed to cut fire risk by restricting access to dry, brushy areas.

Brian Allan exhibit reception Saturday Laguna Beach artist Brian Allan will have his work on exhibit at Spa Josephine with an artist reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit will run through Sept. 30 with 25% of all sales donated to the Laguna College of Art and Design Student Scholarship Fund. Auction to support Sawdust benefit fund The Sawdust Art Festival's 19th annual Benevolence Fund Art Auction will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. The purpose of the Benevolence Fund is to help artists in Laguna Beach should they face hardship.

A baby female sea lion that for two days has been floating just off Newport Beach because of illness washed ashore Sunday afternoon, authorities said. "It's been sad. For two days, we have tried to keep people from running down to see her, and she has been so exhausted," said Lt. Dave Wenger, a lifeguard with the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department. Friends of the Sea Lions, a nonprofit organization in Laguna Beach that rescues sick sea lions, took the animal back to its clinic, where it will be treated and later released back into the ocean.
