Tony Altobelli NEWPORT BEACH - It wasn't pretty out there, but when the smoke cleared, Newport Harbor High girls volleyball, led by April Ross and Taylor Govaars, defeated visiting Laguna Beach in four games Wednesday night. Newport won, 15-12, 15-10, 14-16, 15-3, against the Artists. "We have a long way to go," Sailors Coach Dan Glenn said. "We didn't serve the ball very well at all tonight. But it's still early." For the Sailors (2-0), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section in the Orange County Sportswriters poll, senior April Ross had 15 kills, 22 assists and six aces, while Taylor Govaars added 14 kills and Katie King had 15 assists.

Tony Altobelli LAGUNA BEACH - Sometimes the best defense is a clock-sucking offense. Just ask the Corona del Mar High football team. The Sea Kings dominated the ball, the clock and the game en route to a 27-7 Pacific Coast League win over the host Artists on Laguna Beach's homecoming night. The win, coupled with Estancia's comeback 34-27 win over Costa Mesa, gives Corona del Mar (4-3, 3-0 in league) a guaranteed berth into the CIF Southern Section Division IX playoffs.

Artist Eye Laguna Gallery will feature original paintings by Costa Mesa artist Kay Flierl through Jan. 31, and the gallery will host a reception for Flierl from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Flierl spent 15 years as a graphic artist and was determined to transfer her creative skills to paint. Inspired by her father, who never fully realized his dream of painting, she recognized the same dream within herself. After discovering a box of acrylic paints and a few brushes her father had tucked away in the basement, she began to paint, according to a news release.

Tony Altobelli COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High football coach Jerry Howell made a challenge to his squad following last week's loss and the team rose to the occasion. The Mustangs combined tough defense with an in-your-face offense for a 17-14 Pacific Coast League win over Laguna Beach Thursday night at Orange Coast College. "After the way we played against Corona del Mar last Friday (a 37-7 loss), we needed to get back to playing smashmouth football," Howell said.
