Terry Boesel, a head coach for five seasons at La Verne University, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at UC Irvine, the school announced Tuesday. Boesel, 41, replaces Mike Johnson, who was hired Monday as an assistant at USC. Boesel had a 63-60 record in two separate stints at La Verne, the most recent being the last two seasons. He also coached the Leopards from 1995-98, before leaving to become an assistant at the University of San Diego.

Steve Virgen Tom Trager never really knew he wanted to become a baseball coach until he learned more about the game in college. At Glendora High, he simply used his talent to attain notoriety and success. However, at La Verne University, Trager met a coach who changed his life and taught him more about baseball. That helped Trager want to become a coach, and he went on to flourish at Corona del Mar High. "I never had a coach like that until I went to La Verne," Trager said of Ben Heinz, who later became the hitting coach for the Dodgers.

Esper Keiser Jr. Legendary coach remembered as a kind, caring individual by Pat Yarborough Esper Hardy Keiser Jr., a prominent figure in athletic education in Claremont for four decades, died in his sleep on June 24, 2011 at his home on Balboa Island. ‘Coach’ Keiser was 74 years of age. A ‘local’ from the beginning, Coach Keiser was born on February 1, 1937 to Esper Hardy Keiser and Christine Rodrigues Keiser in Pomona. His father was in the insurance business for many years.  He grew up and attended schools in Pomona—Emerson Junior High and Pomona High Schools.

UCI ASSISTANT BOLTS UC Irvine assistant men's basketball coach Terry Boesel announced his resignation to become associate athletic director at Chapman University. Boesel was an assistant to UC Irvine Coach Pat Douglass for the past three seasons. "Terry is a loyal, tireless worker, very professional and extremely well-organized on and off the court," Douglass said in a press release. "He played a big hand in helping us land one of the best recruiting classes we've had since my time here."

FIELD HOCKEY Newport Harbor 4, Bonita 1 NEWPORT BEACH — Caroline Gels scored twice to help the Sailors open the season with a win Tuesday. Jordan Blanchfield and Sophie Templin scored one goal each, while the Newport Harbor defense held La Verne Bonita scoreless in the second half. Newport Harbor Coach Amanda Boyer also credited the win to solid defensive play from Jenna Nulty, Mia Bagui and Allana Rockwell and goalies Cailynn Smethurst and Erika Nilsson, with three saves each.
