LA VERNE — The Estancia High boys' water polo team finished the season in the same fashion it did a year ago. The Eagles lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs. Second-seeded Damien of La Verne eliminated the Eagles with a 20-9 home victory Wednesday. "Eight guys on their team scored," said Estancia Coach John Carpenter, adding that his team fell behind the Spartans, 15-4, at halftime. "They have a lot of depth. " Senior Charlie Umansky led Estancia with eight goals.

Steve Virgen Tom Trager never really knew he wanted to become a baseball coach until he learned more about the game in college. At Glendora High, he simply used his talent to attain notoriety and success. However, at La Verne University, Trager met a coach who changed his life and taught him more about baseball. That helped Trager want to become a coach, and he went on to flourish at Corona del Mar High. "I never had a coach like that until I went to La Verne," Trager said of Ben Heinz, who later became the hitting coach for the Dodgers.

Esper Keiser Jr. Legendary coach remembered as a kind, caring individual by Pat Yarborough Esper Hardy Keiser Jr., a prominent figure in athletic education in Claremont for four decades, died in his sleep on June 24, 2011 at his home on Balboa Island. ‘Coach’ Keiser was 74 years of age. A ‘local’ from the beginning, Coach Keiser was born on February 1, 1937 to Esper Hardy Keiser and Christine Rodrigues Keiser in Pomona. His father was in the insurance business for many years.  He grew up and attended schools in Pomona—Emerson Junior High and Pomona High Schools.

UCI ASSISTANT BOLTS UC Irvine assistant men's basketball coach Terry Boesel announced his resignation to become associate athletic director at Chapman University. Boesel was an assistant to UC Irvine Coach Pat Douglass for the past three seasons. "Terry is a loyal, tireless worker, very professional and extremely well-organized on and off the court," Douglass said in a press release. "He played a big hand in helping us land one of the best recruiting classes we've had since my time here."
