WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UCLA 81, Vanguard 52 LOS ANGELES - Veronica Beavor had 12 points and Esther Timmermans added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Lions, who completed their exhibition season Monday at the John Wooden Center. Beavor made four of nine three-point attempts, while Timmermans finished five of eight from the field to go with three assists. Vanguard opens its regular season Nov. 19 at home against La Verne. * WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL The Master's def. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL New Mexico tournament ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore outside hitter Aly Squires amassed 26 kills, 20 digs and five blocks to help the Anteaters earn a 19-25, 28-30, 26-24, 25-21, 15-13 win over Portland State in the Lobo Invitational on Saturday. Junior libero Kristin Winkler set a UCI single-match record with 34 digs. Shaina Olsen had 14 kills and 14 digs for UCI (4-4), for which Marissa Alvarez had 29 assists and Shannon Fleming had 11 block assists.

Patrick Laverty With a roster hovering around 20 players, Sage Hill School's football team could use a midseason break to rest the lingering injuries that occur over the course of a season. The Lightning will get a chance to rest next week because of a bye, but they'd like to enter that bye week with a victory against Ribet Academy. Sage Hill will play host to Ribet Academy Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Fighting Frogs (2-2) come into the contest on a high after defeating La Verne Lutheran last week, 65-0.

IRVINE — Visiting Concordia University, an NAIA school, surprised UC Irvine, 57-56, in the Anteaters’ preseason men’s basketball exhibition game Monday at the Bren Events Center. UCI junior guard Patrick Rembert missed a desperation three-point try from near halfcourt and the buzzer, allowing the Eagles to lead the entire second half. Junior guard Darren Moore led UCI with 14 points, while sophomore Eric Wise had 11 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with seven.

The Newport Harbor High field hockey team outscored four opponents a combined 4-1 Saturday, but settled for two wins, one loss and a tie at the Westminster tournament at Westminster High. The Sailors opened the round-robin tournament -- that featured 25-minute games -- with a 1-0 loss to Camarillo. The Tars defeated Sunset League rival Huntington Beach, 3-0, before knocking off Chaminade, 1-0, and tying Glendora, 0-0. Senior midfielder Reese Simmons scored two goals against Huntington Beach, while senior right wing Julia Bernay added the third goal against the Oilers.
