I want to congratulate Steve Smith on his article in the paper on July 26 ("Kobe made more than a mistake"). It was just right. I never saw anyone so truthful and alive. It is about time someone said it to these multimillion dollar athletes with more money than brains. Don't let the L.A. Times and the Lakers retract anything you said. Everything you said was correct. BILL HOPKINS Costa Mesa I've always been a strong, strong fan of Kobe Bryant.

It remains unclear if Kobe Bryant will actually play competitively overseas, but there's at least one additional venture he'll partake in to enhance his footwork. The Los Angeles Lakers star, a Newport Coast resident, is listed as one of the participants planning to play in the Celebrity Soccer Challenge Sunday at Kastles Stadium in Washington D.C., an event sponsored by former U.S. women's soccer player Mia Hamm and her husband, ex-Dodger Nomar Garciaparra. Bryant's certainly no stranger to the pitch, as he played soccer growing up in Italy and is an avid fan of the Premier League's Barcelona and the Brazilian national team.

As Rick Reilly talked about his dreams to be a pro golfer or someone like Derek Jeter, it was difficult to ignore the sign near where he stood at the Newport Beach Library Saturday afternoon. The sign read, "The Witte Lectures: A forum for ideas with distinguished speakers. " Distinguished? It probably wouldn't be appropriate to describe any sportswriter as distinguished, even Reilly. He was more of a comedian during his, "lecture," when he cracked jokes about Kobe Bryant - "Does Kobe hang around at this library?

There's an old maxim when tragedy strikes that goes "if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. " That accurately characterizes the Los Angeles Laker situation after the recent knee injury to Kobe Bryant that took place against Memphis. He played the last quarter oblivious to the fact that he had suffered a fracture to his left knee. He had only played six games this season prior to the injury. Bryant had yet to recover from an Achilles' tendon injury that occurred. Bryant had yet to regain the explosive dominance he was known for in the short time back.

There was an emotional moment for Darlene Gardner on Thursday night at Equinox fitness gym in Irvine. Gardner held back tears when she talked about a life-changing experience and the support she received while she worked to lose weight for charity. This isn't a story about touchdowns or home runs. It involves plenty of sweat, and maybe some tears. Somewhere in this, believe it or not, Kobe Bryant can be found. Let me explain. Gardner, an Irvine resident who owns Antonia, a women's shoe store in Newport Beach, joined the 28-Day Weight Loss Challenge put on by Fit Foods 4 Life.

For a short while Tuesday evening, Kobe Bryant drove far away from his Newport Coast mansion and completely abandoned his opulent lifestyle. He arrived at skid row. It's a place filled with garbage and littered with human waste — but among the despair, he found hope. "You get to hear the stories, you get to see firsthand what's going on," Bryant said Wednesday at an event in Hollywood to promote his work with homeless people. While walking around downtown L.A., Bryant met one man in particular who seemed to have a deep effect on the Lakers guard.
