IRVINE - Its best regular-season finish in at least a decade was quickly rendered a footnote Tuesday, as the UC Irvine women's basketball team wasted an exhilarating start and its first home postseason game ever in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Tournament. UC Santa Barbara (15-15), the No. 6 seed, overcame a disastrous opening to earn a 61-51 victory that ended the season for the No. 3-seeded Anteaters (13-17). UCI held the Gauchos without a point for the first 6:28 and led, 8-0, despite having its first-team all-conference senior guard, Kassandra McCalister, come off the bench due to a broken bone in her foot.

IRVINE - It was a storybook senior night for two UC Irvine women's basketball players Saturday as Kiara Belen provided the opening act while Kassandra McCalister gave a blockbuster performance as the headliner. Belen delivered a rousing rendition of the national anthem just before tipoff of a 72-65 Big West Conference victory against visiting UC Santa Barbara. UCI's sweep of UCSB in two conference games this season is the first such sweep since the 1987-88 season. McCalister, who has carried much of the load all season, produced a career-high 36 points, including nine straight to spark a 12-0 run in the final moments to secure a win that might have otherwise slipped away.

IRVINE — UC Irvine women's basketball coach Molly Goodenbour took a step back Tuesday night, anxious to see just how far her players had moved forward from a 9-21 record last season. For the most part, she liked what she saw in the Anteaters' 84-71 exhibition victory over NAIA representative Concordia at the Bren Events Center. UCI, which relied heavily on first-team All-Big West Conference performer Mikah Maly-Karros, as well as point guard Jade Smith-Williams to carry the offensive load last season, produced five double-figure scorers to eventually overwhelm the Eagles.

IRVINE — Growing pains or just excruciatingly painful losses? UC Irvine women's basketball coach Molly Goodenbour said it may be too soon to tell Saturday, after the Anteaters dropped their second crucial Big West Conference game in three days to fall from a tie for first place into a three-way tie for third. Visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo maintained sole possession of first place by rallying from an eight-point second-half deficit to claim a 72-70 triumph and improve to 9-7, 5-0 in conference in front of a season-best home crowd of 1,575 at the Bren Events Center.

The UC Irvine women's basketball program's nationwide search for a coach to replace Molly Goodenbour found its man just a few feet down the bench. Doug Oliver, whose coaching resume extends nearly 40 years and includes stints as an assistant with the UCI men's and women's program in the last three seasons, was named Monday to become the Anteaters' eighth women's coach. Oliver, a men's head coach at Idaho State for eight years (1998 to 2006) is known best for his two tenures as a men's assistant at Stanford, where in 14 seasons, the Cardinal made eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Final Four in 1997-98.
