While playing at a house party some time ago, Samantha Smith messed up. She lost the lyric, missed the melody, did something wrong. There had been so many different versions of a particular song, that sometimes she forgot and stumbled. She was forced to improvise. But that is what she loves about music. Instead of getting nervous, or stopping and trying to correct the mistake, Samantha, Sam to some, inserted a new bridge to the song at that moment and continued forward. “It ended up being the best part of the song,” she said.

As the school year came to an end, the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa recognized excellence among students at many Costa Mesa schools. At a recent club meeting, members of the club's service leadership committee — Jim Bonar, Wayne Crawford, Jeff Dimsdale, and Anis Wakim, ably assisted by Ann Bonar, Lilian Crawford, Buzz Kostlan and Kent and Nancy Mueller — presented awards to 37 students who have made notable contributions to the community...

Two Estancia High School students were among the 141 who received Prudential Spirit of Community Awards on Friday at the Westin South Coast Plaza. The students are local honorees in the nation's largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteerism. The Estancia winners were Anh Do and Vanessa Hernandez. Anh is the president of the Key Club and spent time at Project Cuddle working with foster children. Vanessa spent six months in the Republic of Malawi on the African continent, where she taught English to children twice a week.

This is a busy time of the year for service clubs in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. Some club members are ringing the Salvation Army bells and staffing the donation kettles at local shopping centers. Others, such as the Exchange Clubs of Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor, are delivering food and Christmas gifts to families in need. Still others, partnering with their Interact and Key Club groups, are decorating their Rose Parade floats in time for the 124th parade being held Jan. 1 in Pasadena.

This is a busy time of the year for our communities' service clubs. Some club members are ringing Salvation Army bells and staffing the donation kettles at local shopping centers. Others are delivering food and Christmas gifts to families in need. Still others are partnering with their Interact or Key Club groups, and decorating their Rose Parade floats in time for the New Year's Day parade in Pasadena. Speaking of the Rose Parade, the Kiwanis International Float will be seventh in the parade lineup, while the Lions International float will be No. 48 and Rotary International's float No. 51. The parade begins at 8 a.m. on Jan. 1. The best TV viewing in Southern California will be on KTLA Channel 5. Circle K at OCC The Orange Coast College Circle K Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa, has become a force of community service in Costa Mesa.
