MEN'S SOCCER Orange Coast 1, Cypress 1 COSTA MESA - The host Pirates outshot the Chargers, 16-4, but needed an own-goal to earn the draw in the Orange Empire Conference contest Tuesday. OCC's Jake Little sent a shot toward the goal that deflected off the head of a Cypress defender for OCC's lone tally in the 73rd minute. OCC is 6-4-3, 3-2-2 in conference. Cypress is 5-5-4, 2-4-1. * Concordia 3, Vanguard 1 COSTA MESA - The visiting Eagles prevailed in a Golden State Athletic Conference game marred by two red cards, six yellow cards and 39 fouls Tuesday.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Highlander Invitational RIVERSIDE - Junior Steven Melena placed second to lead UC Irvine to the team title on Saturday at UC Riverside. Melena completed the 6,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 45.8 seconds to lead five Anteaters in the top nine. Sophomore Alex Tebbe (fifth in 17:57.8), senior Nick Osborne (sixth in 18:00.1), senior Sam Hyams (eighth in 18:03.5) and Tommy Newton-Neal finished (ninth in 18:05.1), helped UCI post 30 points, 11 better than runner-up Wyoming.

MEN'S SOCCER Biola 1, Vanguard 0 COSTA MESA - The No. 4-seeded Lions were upset in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament by No. 5 Biola Wednesday. Marco Ruvalcaba scored an unassisted goal in the 77th minute for the Eagles (11-5-2). Vanguard (12-7) outshot Biola, 14-9. Lions goalie Cody Adams had three saves. Kyle O'Brien had three shots, while Kevin Cornwall and Nikola Ilich had two shots each for Vanguard. * WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Orange Coast def. MEN'S WATER POLO UC Irvine 10, Pacific 9 STOCKTON - Freshman Jacob Mourer scored three goals to pace the No. 8-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest against the No. 7-ranked Tigers on Saturday. Michael Bailey had seven saves, while Trent Baxter and Mitch Wise scored twice for visiting UCI (13-8, 1-3 in conference). UOP, which rallied from a 7-5 deficit to take an 8-7 lead, fell to 9-8, 0-3. Mourer goals tied it at 8 and gave UCI a 9-8 lead that became a two-goal cushion when Baxter scored with 6:00 left.

MEN'S SOCCER UC Irvine 1, Cal State Fullerton 0 IRVINE - Freshman Cameron Iwasa scored his first collegiate goal to pace the host Anteaters to the overtime Big West Conference win Saturday. Marco Franco and Miguel Ibarra were credited with assists on Iwasa's score in the 94th minute. Andrew Fontein had five saves for his sixth shutout of the season, the 26th of his career. No.7-ranked UCI improves to 13-4, 5-2 in conference and remains tied for first place with UC Davis.

COSTA MESA - Vanguard University men's soccer coach Randy Dodge said his players did their jobs Wednesday to help the Lions record a 3-0 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over visiting Point Loma Nazarene. Doing their job has been more difficult than it appeared on Wednesday for the Lions, because those jobs have been changing virtually game-by-game. Injuries, red-card suspensions and other factors have created a fluid lineup for Dodge, who has had just one player, junior defender Chris Marvin, start all 13 games this season.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Mesa could not stop the state's rushing leader Saturday. Domenic Betts rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries to lead the Orange Coast College football team to a 38-17 road victory. Bill Chimphalee had 90 yards on seven carries to contribute to the vaunted Pirates' rushing attack. The Pirates (2-3) scored all of their points in the first half. Betts scored two touchdowns in each quarter. He scored on a 49-yard touchdown run 87 seconds into the game.
