Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High standout, is returning to the sand. May-Treanor, who has been out for a year, will reunite with longtime partner Kerri Walsh for the AVP Crocs Tour World Challenge: USA vs. Brazil, Sept. 25-27 in Glendale, Ariz. “It’s hard to believe it has been an entire year since I last played on tour,” May-Treanor said in a statement. “I’ve been working hard to get back into shape after the injury and I think it will be a lot of fun getting back on the sand and playing with Kerri in this unique event.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor, who along with partner Kerri Walsh form the top-seeded women’s team, advanced to the semifinals set for today at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach volleyball tournament that began Saturday. May-Treanor and Walsh defeated No. 5-seeded Carrie Dodd and Titiana Minello, 22-20, 19-21, 17-15, in the quarterfinals Saturday night. May-Treanor and Walsh handled sisters Katie and Tracy Lindquist, 21-10, 21-10, earlier Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Call it hometown, not home-court, advantage. When Misty May-Treanor plays in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Long Beach Open this weekend, it won't be just another tournament. No, this will be the first time AVP's winningest female player will compete professionally in the town she lives in that's also home to her alma mater, Long Beach State. It's a place filled with the memories of cavorting and clowning around with her Long Beach State volleyball teammates, and it's the city where she got her first apartment.

In 2002, Misty May-Treanor hit the lowest point in her career. In a career filled with so many highs, there have been very few lows. When she was 24, she was down there. It didn't have so much to do with an injury or a missed opportunity. May-Treanor said her mother's death caused her great pain and challenged her love for volleyball, she revealed in an exclusive interview with the Daily Pilot Thursday afternoon. She was in Huntington Beach to promote a contest with Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat bread.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh defeated Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, 21-14, 21-19, in the final Sunday to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Cuervo Gold Crown Dallas Open at the Ballpark in Arlington. The win avenged a 21-19, 21-19 loss to Branagh-Youngs in the semifinals of the season-opening Miami Open last week. Branagh and Youngs went on to win that event. May-Treanor and Walsh, who won the final seven events of the 2006 AVP season, have not gone consecutive weeks without winning an AVP tour event since 2004.

ATLANTA ? It was a case of some déjà vu for locals Misty May-Treanor and Jake Gibb Sunday. Top seed May-Treanor (Newport Harbor High) and Kerri Walsh continued their domination of the Assn. of Volleyball Professional Crocs Tour, winning the women's title at the Atlanta Open. It was their seventh consecutive title of the year. The defeated second seeds Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder 21-9, 21-15 in the final. With the win, May-Treanor, the winningest female beach volleyball player of al time, registered 76th title.

BEIJING — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh, are two wins away from defending their Olympic gold medal in women’s beach volleyball. The No. 2-seeded duo, which has now won 106 straight matches and has not lost a game in the last two Olympic Games, defeated Brazilians Ana Paula Connelly and Larissa Franca, 21-18, 21-15, in a quarterfinal this morning in China. Brazil, the No. 3 seed, came together just days before the Olympics as Connelly stepped in for Juliana Silva, who had to withdraw because of an injury.

BEIJING — Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High standout, and partner Kerri Walsh captured their second straight gold medal winning their final against China Thursday morning in Beijing. May-Treanor and Walsh, playing through a steady rain, defeated Wang Jie and Tian Jia, 21-18, 21-18. In the process, May-Treanor and Walsh did not lose a single set in Beijing and extended their winning streak to 108 matches in a row. The final was played in front of a packed 12,200-seat Chaoyang Park venue.

MASON, Ohio — Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh had their 111-consecutive-match streak was snapped Sunday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Cup Shootout. May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High star, and Walsh, the two-time Olympic gold-medal winning duo, lost to Elaine Young and Nicole Branagh, 21-19, 10-21, 25-23, in 105 minutes. May-Treanor suffered their last loss, on Aug. 19, 2007, to Branagh and Youngs. May-Treanor and Walsh beat April Ross, also a former Newport Harbor standout, and Jen Boss in the semifinals, 21-14, 23-21.

Fresh off landing a spot on “Dancing With the Stars,” Misty May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High standout, will appear on Oprah and a Disney television show. May-Treanor, who won her second Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball with Kerri Walsh at the Beijing Games, was one of 150 athletes invited to appear on Oprah’s season premiere of her show that was shot on Wednesday and will air on Monday at 3 p.m. on KABC. May-Treanor will also make a guest appearance on the Disney Channel’s show, “Wizards of Waverly Place.

Newport Beach resident Donald Sun has bought the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach tour and vowed to restore it to a schedule that included as many as 31 events in 2008, the Los Angeles Times has reported. Sun, 37, a graduate of University High in Irvine and UCLA, said he paid $2 million to buy the AVP from its former owner, and plans to shift its headquarters to Newport Beach. "I'm not a volleyball guru, but I understand the enthusiasm people have for volleyball," said Sun, a former executive at the Fountain Valley-based Kingston Technology Co., whose new title is managing partner and owner of the AOS Group.

April Ross, a former Newport Harbor High standout, and Jen Kessy posed for photos with Viking swords after winning the FIVB Grand Slam Stavanger in beach volleyball Saturday. Ross and Kessy, the No. 3 seeded team, beat the No. 13-seeded team of Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig of Germany, 21-16, 21-15, using just 40 minutes. The semifinal proved to be more of a challenge for Ross and Kessy. They dropped the first set, 27-25, to the No. 6-seeded team of Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel of the Netherlands earlier in the day. But Ross and Kessy battled back to win the next two sets, 21-11, 15-11.

Misty May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High star, and Kerri Walsh are reuniting as a team to make a run at a third straight Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball, according to a report by NBC Sports. May-Treanor met with Walsh for lunch in Manhattan Beach to let her know that she wanted to play this season, the report said. May-Treanor had said he was taking 2011 off last summer. "I'm extremely excited to partner with Kerri again, to go out and defend our Olympic gold medal and represent the United States," May-Treanor told NBC. "We feel very strongly that London will be a great Olympic Games.

There will be plenty of time for laughter today when Misty May-Treanor is featured in a TV show with Shaquille O’Neal. But as for what the future has in store for May-Treanor, well that’s not so comical. There’s nothing for certain, the former Newport Harbor High standout is well aware of that. What’s ahead? Who knows. She’s just enjoying the present. So that means tonight she plans to sit on the couch and watch herself team up with Kerri Walsh, playing in the “Shaq Vs.” show (9 p.m., ABC)

BERLIN — Sharon Day, regarded by many as the greatest athlete from Costa Mesa High, earned the eighth spot after four events in the heptathlon at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany Saturday. Day’s highest finish came in the high jump. She cleared 1.89 meters (6.2 feet) to take second and earned 1,093 points. She finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 13.42 meters (44.04 feet), a personal best, and garnered 755 points. She was eighth in the 200 meters, third in her heat, finishing in 25.15 seconds.

Misty May-Treanor won’t compete in the Hermosa Beach Open, yet she’ll be playing at that beach Sunday, taking on the “Big Sand-eater.” May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High star, will team with Kerri Walsh for a television show, playing against Shaquille O’Neal. “I just now added Hermosa Beach sand to my salad. I eat sand,” O’Neal said during a news conference with May-Treanor and Walsh, according to the Los Angeles Times.
