KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Newport Beach Breakers will now have to look to gain some type of momentum with Pete Sampras' return on Tuesday. That's because the Breakers suffered their second straight loss, as the Kansas City Explorers defeated Newport Beach, 23-19, on Sunday at Barney Allis Plaza in Kansas City. Newport Beach's Lauren Albanese will most likely welcome Sampras with the hopes he will cause distraction. The 17-year-old was playing in the final set, women's singles, just as in the Breakers' 20-19 loss to Springfield Saturday.

Tonight's World TeamTennis match between the Newport Beach Breakers and Kansas City Explorers might be better known as the match that could have been. What could have been: Maria Sharapova vs. Anna Kournikova. What's instead? Nadia Petrova has replaced the Breakers' Sharapova, the Wimbledon champion, when Newport Beach will host Kansas City, which will be without Kournikova, tonight at 7 at Palisades Tennis Club. The Breakers defeated St. Louis on the road Friday, 24-21.

The Kansas City Explorers defeated the Newport Beach Breakers, 21-20, in a World Team Tennis match Friday night at the Plaza Tennis Center in Mission, Kansas. The Breakers, who host Springfield at 7 tonight at the Palisades Tennis Club, fell to 1-3 as the Explorers won a super tiebreaker, 7-6, to win the match. Kansas City's Rachel McQuillan and Laura Granville beat Newport' Maria Sharapova and Eva Dyrberg in women's doubles, 5-3, to open the match, then Granville topped Sharapova in women's singles, 5-3. In mixed doubles, Kansas City's McQuillan and Rick Leach edged Sharapova and Josh Eagle, 5-4. In men's doubles, Eagle and Brian MacPhie defeated Leach and David Wheaton, 5-4, then MacPhie tied the match with a 5-1 victory over Wheaton in men's singles, before pulling it out in a super tiebreaker.

John McEnroe is the latest marquee player to visit Newport Beach. The last two Grand Slam champions have fallen. Michael Chang. Andre Agassi. Is McEnroe next? The way Ramon Delgado is playing for the Breakers, it looks likely. Delgado rallied Newport Beach Sunday, clinching a World Team Tennis playoff spot for the Breakers in the final set. The reigning WTT Male MVP will try to finish off McEnroe and the New York Sportimes tonight at Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Country Club at 7:05.

Maria Sharapova, who will play for the Newport Beach Breakers for a second straight year in World Team Tennis, dramatically defeated two-time defending champion and top-seeded Serena Williams, 6-1, 6-4, Saturday to win the Wimbledon singles title at age 17. Sharapova, the No. 13 seed and the first Russian to win a Wimbledon singles crown, became the third youngest women's champion in history. Sharapova overcame a 4-2 deficit in the second set. Williams broke Sharapova's serve, to go up, 4-2. But Sharapova broke back, quickly regaining control of a match that belonged to her. After Williams hit a forehand into the net to end the match, Sharapova dropped to her knees and covered her face with both hands.

Jock makes 800 final MIRAMAR, Fla. — UC Irvine All-American Charles Jock won his semifinal heat in the 800 meters Saturday morning to advance to today's final at the North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Track & Field Championships in Miramar, Fla. Jock qualified with a time of 1 minute 50.52 seconds at the Ansin Sports Complex. USA teammate Cory Primm (UCLA) won the other heat in 1:50.12. Tennis legend Pete Sampras will be joining a winning team Saturday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach. The Newport Beach Breakers responded to their first loss of the season with a 23-14 road win against the Kansas City Explorers Friday, improving to 3-1 in the World Team Tennis league. The Breakers, atop the Western Conference, won four of the five sets, the only loss coming in women's singles as Anne Keothavong fell to Madison Brengle, 3-5. Lester Cook opened with a 5-2 win over Alex Kuznetsov in men's singles.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will join the Newport Beach Breakers as their marquee player this summer at Newport Beach Country Club. The 21-year-old Russian will play in the Breakers’ 2009 regular-season finale on July 22 against the Kansas City Explorers at Breakers Stadium. Sharapova, the former World No. 1 who is now No. 30, played for the Breakers when she was 16 before she made a splash on the world tennis scene. Owner of 19 WTA Tour singles titles, she played for the Breakers from 2003-05, playing for the Breakers full time in 2003 and contributing to their 2004 World Team Tennis championship, and came back to the team in 2007.

The Newport Beach Breakers selected Women?s Tennis Association star Lindsay Davenport with the first pick of the World Team Tennis Marquee Player Draft on Tuesday. Davenport, a Laguna Beach resident and formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, will play one home match for the Breakers in July at Newport Beach Country Club?s Breakers Stadium and one away match. ?We are ecstatic to welcome Lindsay back to Newport Beach,? Breakers executive director Jeff Purser said in a statement.

NEWPORT BEACH — Mike Bryan said it's been a whirlwind. That might be the best way to describe a month that has featured Bryan and his twin brother Bob capture their second Wimbledon men's doubles title, then play Davis Cup, and now settle in for a lengthy tour as marquee players in World Team Tennis. Many people don't even use their first names; just saying "the Bryan brothers" suffices. The best doubles team in the world — arguably of all-time — came to Newport Beach on Wednesday night, playing for defending league champion Kansas City.

Anne Keothavong, Great Britain's No. 2-ranked singles player, sometimes goes by the nickname, "Special K. " The Newport Beach Breakers sure hope the tennis player will be special for them. The Breakers selected Keothavong with the first overall pick in the World Team Tennis Roster Player Draft Tuesday. Keothavong, 27, ranked No. 109 by the International Tennis Federation will make her WTT debut this July. Since turning pro in 2001, Keothavong has won 17 ITF singles titles and five ITF doubles titles in her career.

The Newport Beach Breakers are bringing back one of the best players in tennis history this July. The Breakers selected 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras with the first overall pick in the World Team Tennis Marquee Player Draft on Tuesday. Sampras, 39, retired from the Assn. of Tennis Professionals Tour in 2003. He previously played for the Breakers in 2006 and 2007. Sampras, the former world No. 1 who held the men's record for most Grand Slam singles titles before being surpassed by Roger Federer in 2009, still holds the record of being ranked at No. 1 for a total of 286 weeks.

NEWPORT BEACH — The first super tiebreaker of the year came suddenly for the Newport Beach Breakers Tuesday night at The Tennis Club Newport Beach. Eventually, it went to 6-6. The first team to seven wins the match. Lester Cook and David Martin made it one to remember, winning that 6-6 point after two solid volleys by Martin as the Breakers escaped with a 19-18 win over the Kansas City Explorers. Maria Sharapova almost packed the seats; the Breakers' marquee player was the star.
