He had just drew a key penalty and most would think he would take the subsequent shot, but Mann said he wanted to do what was best for his Cal Bears. Mann, the Corona del Mar High product, pointed to Jeff Tyrrell, who connected on the penalty shot with 1:12 remaining. Cal held off USC and won, 6-5, to snap the Trojans' 44-game win streak and capture the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament title Saturday at UC Irvine.

CORONA DEL MAR — There was plenty of talent on the pool deck at Corona del Mar High Thursday afternoon. Water polo fans there to see the Sea Kings also saw Ryan Bailey, Genai Kerr and John Mann. Bailey, a U.S. national team member and a former UC Irvine standout, is on the CdM coaching staff. Kerr, a Team USA goalie and former UCI star, was there to work with a youth program, as was Mann, the former CdM standout who is on the U.S. national team. If people saw Mann up close they would notice he was wearing something the Sea Kings hope to have: a championship ring.

The USA men’s senior national water polo team cut its roster from 24 to 18 Wednesday, and John Mann is still on the team. But surviving the cut is not what it’s all about for the former Corona del Mar High star. “It feels good,” Mann, a two-meter player, said of remaining on the team. “But that’s not my goal. It’s my goal to go to the Olympics and medal. I’m shooting to make this team. I’m not looking at it as, ‘Hey, I made it past this cut.’ It’s a rough process and to see some of my teammates taken off the team is tough, but for me it’s one step closer.
