Richard Dunn NEWPORT BEACH - The Toshiba Senior Classic, which suffered a final-round rainout last year in Week 9 and is expected to battle the weather again this year, could be moved back to Week 10 on the Senior PGA Tour schedule for 2002. The Senior Tour will not announce next year's schedule until July, but there's a possibility it could include an additional stop in Mexico, which would fill Week 9 on the tour calendar and push back the three ensuing California stops a week.

Toshiba Classic Richard Dunn It was late Monday afternoon, the first day of player practice rounds for the Toshiba Senior Classic in Newport Beach. Earlier, because of unplayable conditions due to rain, Senior PGA Tour official Skip Whittet canceled the practice rounds, but the visiting golfers could use the practice putting greens, which is where Jim Colbert was spotted. Like many of the players in the field, Colbert arrived on a charter flight late Sunday night from Mexico, where Mike McCullough won his first Senior Tour event at Las Vista in Puebla.

The Champions Tour has moved up the freeway to Valencia Country Club this week, and though I will be up there covering the AT&T Champions Classic, I still can’t get last week’s Toshiba Classic out of my mind. With the economy the way it is I was expecting an event that would be a shell of itself. It wouldn’t have been the fault of Toshiba or Executive Tournament Director, Jeff Purser or Hoag Hospital. Times are bad and expectations — at least in my mind — were for a half empty gallery.

NEWPORT BEACH - The strut of Jim Colbert that was a trademark walk and noticeable from two fairways away has been slowed by the humility of age, but for one day, he was back prowling around Newport Beach Country Club. His jaunt, after posting a 66 in the first round of the Toshiba Classic today, didn’t include a trip to the locker room. The guys would have been waiting for him and he didn’t want to endure the teasing and harassment that surely was awaiting him from the other golfers.

Paul Clinton NEWPORT BEACH -- Driving a ball down the fairway may not be the toughest part of the Newport Beach Country Club's golf course. But once you get to the sloping greens, you could be in trouble. It's a fact those in the 78-player field of this weekend's Toshiba Senior Classic are reminded of each year. "The thing about this golf course that makes it a difficult course is the greens," Toshiba entrant Walter Morgan said. The course, built in the mid-1950s, was among the tougher challenges on the Senior PGA Tour last year, with golfers shooting an average 72.404 score at the course.

The drama is about to unfold for the 14th time in the Toshiba Classic, the only pro tournament in Orange County. From year to year, there are so many storylines entering the tournament. Some stories come alive all on their own throughout each round, each swing of the club, each putt on the green. The site, Newport Beach Country Club, is not just about a quaint golf course possessing a picturesque backdrop of the ocean. Competition is found here and a champion rises. Meanwhile, in each year, there’s proof that more memories will be created.
