Suzie Harrison Betty Benowitz has been making people feel at home and part of the family for many years as executive director of senior services at the Jewish Community Center of Orange County. "I like the contact -- and being able to help people of that age is a value," Benowitz said. She talked about the diversity of people who come to the senior center, their background, career and hobbies. She finds it very interesting. "Working with the seniors is a great experience.

Zack Zarilli, a 1999 graduate of Corona del Mar High School and the son of Siouxzie Zarilli of Balboa Island, made the dean's list for the 2000 spring semester at the University of San Diego. He will be a sophomore this fall in the college of arts and sciences. ... The J's Celebration Ball 2000 Committee recently hosted a lunch and Jewish Community Center site tour to kick off this year's fund-raiser ball, titled "Celebrate our Youth" and planned for Oct. 29 at the Hyatt Newporter in Newport Beach.

Jennifer Kho COSTA MESA -- The Costa Mesa Senior Center's board of trustees on Tuesday night made interim director Aviva Goelman's position permanent. Goelman, who became the interim director in August, is the center's first executive director since Alan M. Meyers was fired in May for allegedly spending much of his career impersonating doctors and embezzling money from health clinics and nonprofits across the country. "I got the call and I was happy, thrilled, shocked -- I think a combination of all of those," she said Wednesday.

Young Chang Selma Sladek is confident that the upcoming Jewish Festival of Books will appease even the most voracious reader of her faith. Jews are called the "People of the Book," she said, with Israel churning out authors, poets, book consumers and readers in "monumental" numbers. The fifth annual, two-week book sale, which starts Dec. 3 with 5,000 to 7,000 copies of new releases and 19 author appearances, should leave no one disappointed.

Aviva Goelman, who was recently appointed interim director of the Costa Mesa Senior Center, rolled her eyes and fidgeted as she waited to talk to the supervisor of a refrigerator repairman who didn't show up. "Can you imagine this?" she seethed. "I won't take that!" Goelman will be the center's first director since Alan M. Alex Coolman It doesn't have any spotlights. It doesn't have any palm trees. There isn't an awe-inspiring sculpture gracing its facade. Judging by its appearance, the Jewish Community Center of Orange County doesn't seem like the kind of place that would be host to powerful cultural events. The plain Costa Mesa building, with its anonymous stucco exterior, looks like it was designed with board meetings and bake sales in mind. But Culture? With a capital 'C'?

IRVINE — Purim may start Sunday, but preschoolers at the Merage Jewish Community Center in Irvine got a head start on festivities Friday. Spiderman, Tinker Bell, Wonder Woman and other familiar faces made it out for the celebration — in costume. Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the saving of the Jews by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai from the royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, Haman, who was plotting to kill followers of Judaism. Public celebration is just one of the many aspects of the annual holiday.
