April Ross, a Costa Mesa resident and Newport Harbor High product, teamed with Jennifer Kessy to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' Salt Lake City beach volleyball tournament on Sunday. The top-seeded duo of Ross and Kessy, silver medalists at the 2012 Olympics in London, defeated Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar, 20-22, 21-18, 15-13, in the final. In the men's AVP event at the same venue, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb teamed with Casey Patterson to earn a share of third place.

If Olympic beach volleyball players April Ross and Jennifer Kessy seemed right at home Wednesday afternoon as they signed autographs and posed for pictures at CdM Fitness, it's because they were. The pair have trained at the gym on East Coast Highway for about two years. The gym's owner, David Jurevich, accompanied the team to London as their trainer. And Ross and Kessy, who have spent the last month or so since the games toting around some new silver hardware, are both Orange County-bred.

Newport Harbor High product April Ross and fellow Olympic women's beach volleyball silver medalist Jennifer Kessy will be the featured guests at a reception held at CDM Fitness in Corona del Mar on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Ross and Kessy, who lost to Newport Harbor product Misty May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, in the Olympic final in London last month, will be available to sign autographs and answer questions. Whitney Pavlik, a former UC Irvine women's indoor volleyball standout, teamed with Jennifer Kessy to finish third at the Federation International de Volleyball beach event completed Saturday in Durban, South Africa. Pavlik and Kessy lost in the semifinals to a team from Germany, 21-16, 24-26, 15-12. The Americans staved off eight match points to win the second set. Pavlik and Kessy outlasted another German duo, 36-34, 21-18, in the third-place match. It was the first tournament for Pavlik after undergoing shoulder surgery in October.

Multiple media outlets have reported that April Ross, a Newport Harbor High product who won a silver medal in beach volleyball at the 2012 Olympics in London, will partner with three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh-Jennings for most of the 2013 season. Ross has been playing with Jennifer Kessy, with whom she lost to Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor, since retired, in the Olympic final. Ross and Kessy finished second in a Federation Internationale de Volleyball beach event in Rome on Sunday.

Costa Mesa residents Jake Gibb and April Ross won men's and women's titles, respectively at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' latest stop, Friday through Sunday in Atlantic City, N.J. Gibb and partner Casey Patterson, the No. 2-seeded team, defeated top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal, 21-19, 21-15, in the 41-minute final on Sunday. Ross, a product of Newport Harbor High, and her partner, Jennifer Kessy topped Emily Day and Summer Ross, 23-25, 21-16, 15-13, in a 64-minute women's final.

April Ross and Whitney Pavlik finished fourth on Saturday at the Federation Internationale de Volleyball Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland. Ross, a Costa Mesa resident and a former Newport Harbor High star, and Pavlik, a former UC Irvine standout, seeded No. 3, fell to Brazil's Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas in the bronze medal match, 21-18, 21-15 in 37 minutes. The U.S. pair lost in the semifinals to Germany's No. 17 Karla Borger and Britta Buhte, 21-15, 21-19 in 36 minutes.

Costa Mesa residents April Ross and Jake Gibb earned top individual and team honors in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' 2013 season awards announced Tuesday. Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, was named women's Most Valuable Player, as well as Best Offensive Player and Server of the Year. Ross, along with Jennifer Kessy, also claimed Team of the Year honors. Gibb was named Men's MVP and along with Casey Patterson of Huntington Beach, the Team of the Year in the men's circuit.

Costa Mesa residents Jake Gibb and April Ross will attempt to regain their dominance on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour when it begins its seven-event schedule in May. Gibb, with partner Casey Patterson, won four of seven AVP men's events and finished third in the other three tournaments in 2013, when the two-time Olympian was named AVP MVP, Team of the Year (with Patterson) and the Male Beach Athlete of the Year by USA Volleyball. Ross, an Olympic silver medalist in 2012, earned three AVP titles last season and three third-place finishes with a pair of partners in 2013.

April Ross, a Costa Mesa resident and former Newport Harbor High volleyball standout, has been named 2013 Female Beach Athlete of the Year by USA Volleyball. Ross, a 2012 Olympic silver medalist who played with three partners, played in nine domestic and 13 international tournaments in 2013, earning six titles and several other top-three finishes. To help promote the title sponsor, players on the stadium court at the AVP Championships near the Huntington Beach Pier crammed their lengthy, sweaty bodies into small convertible smart cars that served as benches that must have lacked supreme comfort. Turns out, uncomfortable was a fitting theme for both the top-seeded men's and women's teams, both of which included a Costa Mesa resident. The men's duo of Costa Mesa's Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson of Huntington Beach, as well as the favored women's tandem of Costa Mesa's April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings were both upset in the semifinals on Sunday.

Rain and heavy winds halted play on the final day of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' St. Petersburg open in Florida on Sunday. The men's final, in which Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Casey Patterson defeated Theodore Brunner and Nick Lucena, 22-20, in the first game, was suspended. It will be finished on Sept. 26 in Santa Barbara, the day before the AVP's Santa Barbara Open begins. Gibb and Patterson are the No. 2 seed, while Brunner-Lucena are seeded third.

MANHATTAN BEACH - Apparently, retirement is merely a state of mind for Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer, who five months after "retiring" from beach volleyball to become an assistant coach with the U.S. men's national indoor team, won the prestigious Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Manhattan Beach Open on Sunday. Fuerbringer, teamed with Casey Jennings, upset top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal, 21-18, 21-23, 15-12, in an 86-minute final. With the victory, Fuerbringer and Jennings split $20,000.
