Steve Virgen "Atrocious." That's how UC Irvine men's water polo coach Ted Newland described his team's performance in the Anteaters' most important game of the season. UCI, which needed to win or finish second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament to advance to the four-team NCAA Tournament, lost its first-round game, 8-4, to UC Berkeley Friday at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. The Anteaters finished 2 for 12 in extra-man situations, while Cal went 5 for 7, and on one of its man-up opportunities, the Bears chose to run out the clock to end the game.

ANTEATER STADIUM -- San Jose State's Trevor Harris scored on a breakaway in the 73rd minute to lead the visiting Spartans to a 1-0 nonconference men's soccer victory over UC Irvine Sunday. Neither team managed a shot on net in the first half and Anteater goalie Cameron Rossi finished with just one save as UCI fell to 4-2-1. San Jose State's Eddie Dominguez made three saves for the visitors, who were outshot by the Anteaters, 17-7. Dardo Acuna paced the UCI attack with four shots, while Joel Spencer fired three and David Yumane and Sean Iliff each added two for the Anteaters.

Steve Virgen CORONA DEL MAR -- Before the 2002 U.S. Senior Nationals began, Genai Kerr, the starting goalie of the U.S. National Team, said the Newport Harbor Water Polo Foundation had an obligation to maintain its rich tradition throughout the tournament. Kerr's words came to fruition when Newport won the Senior Nationals title Sunday at CdM, a few blocks from where the majority of the team went to school, at UC Irvine, where they played for legendary head coach Ted Newland.

Jeff Powers offered it up as politely as his handshake Thursday afternoon at UC Irvine. Still shiny and new, the silver medal Powers and three former UCI products won in the Beijing Olympic Games as members of the United States men’s water polo team felt, when the latest of a string of interviewers held it, as substantial as the accomplishment itself. Powers, 28, a three-time first-team All-American at UCI from 2000 to 2002 and the Anteaters’ leading scorer in 1999 and 2000, was back at his alma mater to bask in his newfound and, some might say, surprising Olympic glory.

LOS ALAMITOS -- UC Irvine's men's water polo team was a 9-4 winner over University of the Pacific Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament and will meet USC today at the same site, the Armed Forces Training Center, for fifth place, starting at 2:30 p.m. Jeff Powers scored four goals and Dan Noon tallied twice to pace the victory. Dreason Barry, Charlie Fisher and Phil Garcia also scored. UCI goalie Doug Finfrock had eight saves.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Former UC Irvine All-Americans Ryan Bailey and Jeff Powers scored one goal each in the USA Men's National team's 9-2 win over host Brazil in the gold-medal game Thursday of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ex-Anteater Genai Kerr had six saves in goal. Tony Azevedo led the U.S. with four goals as the Americans led 5-0 at halftime at Julio Delamare Aquatic Park. With the victory, the Americans earned an automatic berth in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games at Beijing, China.

Defending world and Olympic champion Aaron Peirsol, a Newport Harbor High product, will be seeking his third straight 200-meter backstroke title in today's final of the swimming world championships in Montreal. Peirsol, 22, winner of three gold medals at last summer's Olympics in Athens, Greece, posted the fastest time (1 minute, 56.60 seconds) in Thursday's semifinal to qualify. Peirsol claimed the 100 backstroke title Tuesday, making him the first man since Roland Matthes of East Germany in 1973 and 1975 to win consecutive 100 back titles a the world championships.

Corona del Mar High senior Joe Ctvrtlik has verbally committed to play volleyball at Stanford, Sea Kings Coach Steve Conti said Tuesday. Ctvrtlik, a setter, helped the Sea Kings win Pacific Coast League, CIF Southern Section Division II and CIF Southern California Regional Division II titles. CdM also captured the ESPN RISE national title. Ctvrtlik is the oldest of three sons of Bob Ctvrtlik, a volleyball hall of famer and Olympic gold medalist who starred at Pepperdine. - Steve Virgen * Powers paces USA Former UC Irvine All-American Jeff Powers scored three goals to help the U.S. men's water polo team defeat Argentina, 13-7, Tuesday at the Pan American Games.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - - Former UC Irvine All-Americans Jeff Powers and Tim Hutten each scored fourth-quarter goals to lead the United States men's water polo team to a 7-3 win over Canada in the championship game of the Pan American Games on Saturday. With the victory, Team USA earns a berth in the 2012 London Olympics. Hutten converted a power-play goal with 4:16 left in the final quarter for a 6-2 lead and Powers scored with 2:34 remaining for a 7-2 margin. UCI alum Ryan Bailey did not score on two shot attempts Saturday.

LOS ALAMITOS - The Newport A men's water polo team went 3-1 games in the first two days of the 2000 Men's Senior Nationals on Friday at the U.S. Water Polo National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos. On Friday, Newport A won its opener, 9-7, over Bruin. Ryan Bailey and Mike Evans each scored three goals. Newport A then blew out Navy Athletic Club, 12-6. Goalie Genie Kerr led Newport with 11 saves. Bailey, Ofer Horn and Mark Hunt each had two goals. Newport A split two games on Saturday.
