WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 65, Irvine Valley 59 (OT) IRVINE — Samantha Hansen finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, helping the Pirates to an Orange Empire Conference come-from-behind win in overtime Wednesday. Sami Little, who finished with 12 points, forced overtime for OCC (20-6, 7-1 in conference). She made a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation and tied the game at 53-53. Irvine Valley College's Police Department warned Thursday that someone has been trying to defraud the school's employees by convincing them to invest in a sham retirement plan. A female suspect claiming to represent Schools First or an affiliated business has been trying to sell tax-deferred annuities to IVC employees, according to police. "This is a scam," police said in an email. "Neither the person, nor the business that the person claims to represent, is affiliated with Schools First, and is not an approved solicitor of the South Orange County Community College District.

Molina, a Costa Mesa High product, was four for seven from the field, including two for four from three-point range. OCC fell to 8-17, 3-6 in conference. The captain of the debate team at Irvine Valley College has been accepted to Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a full scholarship. Aditya Sharma of Irvine has been a standout on the debate team for the past two years, said IVC debate coach Gary Rybold. "We are expecting big things again from him this year, and SIU is one of the nation's premier universities for debate," he said. Sharma won four awards at last year's state championships and a gold medal in debate.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 86, Chaffey 71 IRVINE — Alyssa Hanson and Amanda Deal scored 18 points each for the Pirates in the semifinal game of the Irvine Valley Tournament Friday. Samantha Hansen added 13 points, while Helena Robel and Sami Little scored 10 points each for OCC (9-2), ranked No. 17 in the state. Hanson also had six assists and three steals and Michelle Yamasaki also had six assists. The Pirates will face Irvine Valley in today's title game at 4 p.m. at Irvine Valley.

IVC starters Joe Eberhard and Ramon Mejia, both CdM products, had five and three points, respectively. OCC fell to 5-12, 1-1. Breaking up was hard to do for Annie Kim, but getting back together has been that much sweeter. Kim and volleyball are together again, a harmonious reunion that is commencing at Irvine Valley College, where the Lasers are ranked No. 18 in the state and Kim is a big part of it. Her play in IVC's victory over No. 7-ranked Fullerton earlier in the week was pivotal at a pivotal point in the season. A 5-foot-8 outside hitter, Kim had 15 kills, three blocks and two aces while hitting .320 in the match.

"It isn't whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game" is an old sports adage, maybe outdated in today's "win-at-all-costs" era. But at Irvine Valley College, women's soccer Coach Simon Davies is old school. He has to be. The Lasers play in the extremely tough Orange Empire Conference in the competitive Southern California area. So after a year in which his team went 5-16, including 3-13 in the conference, Davies keeps it all in perspective. Ask Davies how he will turn around the fortunes of his club and he jokes: "Pray harder to the soccer gods.

Irvine Valley College granted two language professors top honors this week. Virginia Shank, who teaches English, and Mercedes Julian, a Spanish instructor, were named Professor of the Year and Part-time Professor of the Year, respectively. Shank has worked at Irvine Valley College since fall 2012 and has published poems in several online and print literary magazines, according to a news release. Students have praised her reading selections, high expectations and willingness to help, the release stated.

David Hill (7-0) struck out eight and walked one in his complete-game victory. He allowed six hits for for OCC (20-6, 8-4 in conference). MEN'S BASKETBALL Irvine Valley 67, Orange Coast 60 Brad Buchignani had 16 points and Devaun Evans added 15 for the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday. OCC led, 30-29, at halftime, but the Lasers gained the lead early in the second half and never lost it, though OCC pulled within 51-50 with 5:11 left. IVC shot 50% for the game, while OCC finished at 32%. OCC had just nine turnovers and had six three-pointers, twice as many as the Lasers. OCC fell to 7-17, 1-6 in conference.

Tom Pestolesi, the Irvine Valley Community College men's and women's volleyball coach who formerly coached at Estancia and Newport Harbor high schools, was honored on Jan. 19 by the University of Hawaii, where he was a third-team All-American men's volleyball player in 1983. Pestolesi received the Pae Makaukau Alumni recognition award at the fourth annual A'o a Koa Scholarship Dinner, which supports the Rainbow Warriors volleyball program. Pestolesi, a two-year letterman for the 'Bows from 1982-83, originally played at Long Beach State before transferring to play for then-head coach Dave Shoji at Hawaii, where he was a two-time second-team all-California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Irvine Valley def. Orange Coast Megan Ritchie had 26 assists for the host Pirates, who fell, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22, in the Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday. Megan Rawlings had eight kills and Carina Perez had 10 digs for OCC (11-6, 6-6 in conference), which is in fifth place in the eight-team OEC. OCC, ranked No. 20 in the state, has been swept just three times this season, twice by IVC. IVC, (18-0, 12-0) is ranked No. 2 in the state.

Irvine Valley College is in the top 20% of schools nationwide for delivering the best experience for military students, according to results from a recent survey. The 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools on the 2014 Military Friendly Schools list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. The schools on the list have world-class programs and policies for student support, academic accreditation, credit policies and other services to assist those who served, according to a news release.
