Player turnover is fast and furious at the junior college level, but Irvine Valley College men's soccer Coach Martin McGrogan doesn't seem to accept the notion of a "rebuilding" year. McGrogan was the program's first coach in 1990, and since then the team has had just three losing seasons, winning one national title and two state titles and was runner-up in the state once. McGrogan, though, deflects praise and gives thanks to the athletes in the Irvine and surrounding areas. "We've been really lucky the past 20 years, we've been fairly consistent," he said.

When entrepreneur Rana Sabeh couldn't find available vendor space to showcase her discount natural products business, she decided to create her own alternative "green" market. The Orange County Green Market debuts Aug. 6 at the Irvine Valley College. Everything from eco-friendly cleaning supplies and services, repurposed accessories, natural skin care products and Sabeh's own business, Healthy Bargains, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the college's parking lot. "I figured that if I'm an eco-friendly vendor trying to get out on the market and I can't, then there must be others like me who are also having a hard time," Sabeh, a Huntington Beach resident, said of her decision to launch the market.

Baseball in Alaska seems to make as much sense as snowboarding in the Bahamas, but don't tell that to Tony Cappuccilli. Cappuccilli is the head coach of the Anchorage Bucs, a collegiate summer league team that plays in the Alaska Baseball League, recognized as one of the top summer leagues in the country. It's a summer job for Cappuccilli, who will return to Irvine after the season and resume his job as assistant baseball coach for Irvine Valley College. Cappuccilli, 30, just finished his second season at IVC and he plans to be there for a few more years, but he isn't the type to sit still for long.

Here's the kicker: Evan is 16 years old, and it was just a couple of months ago that he graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's of science in cognitive science with an emphasis in computational modeling. At age 11, Evan enrolled in Irvine Valley College, where he graduated with an associate's degree at 14. He was the youngest graduate in the history of the college.

COSTA MESA — The Irvine Valley College men’s volleyball team took a bite out of Pacific Coast Conference rival Orange Coast Wednesday night. But not before — and Lasers coaches said afterward, perhaps not unless — 5-foot-9 freshman outside hitter Brandon Directo took a bite out of the host Pirates’ floor while diving for a ball beyond the end line near the end of OCC’s Game 2 victory that put them on the verge of a sweep. Instead, IVC, which had earlier drawn motivation from freshman middle blocker Corey Brophy quickly returning to the match after dislocating his left pinkie finger, seemed to respond when Directo, whose post-match grin revealed a vacant arch in his two chipped front teeth, shook off the injury and returned quickly to the court.
