UC Irvine police will do push-ups to raise money for veterans and their families this weekend at City Hall. A team comprised of UC Irvine Police Chief Paul Henisey, Corporal Chris Bolano, Officer Annie Nguyen, Officer Paul Riscalla and Officer Matt Wroblewski will compete with other teams to squeeze as many push-ups as they can into 90 seconds. The teams are asking for donations for the Boot Campaign, a nonprofit that assists wounded veterans. The event is organized by the Irvine Police Department and Custom Bodies Fitness gym in Irvine.

Irvine police arrested a man Tuesday suspected of burglarizing homes in Newport Beach and south Irvine, authorities said. Brent Brodie, 18, of Irvine, was arrested after police discovered him sleeping in a stolen vehicle, according to a Irvine Police Department news release. Brodie is suspected of five home burglaries and two vehicle thefts over the past four weeks, police said. Police said Brodie checked homes to see if someone was there before entering through unlocked ground-floor windows.

A woman who reportedly jumped or fell off a building near MacArthur Boulevard and Jamboree Road was declared dead Friday, authorities said. Authorities received a call for medical aid in the 19000 block of MacArthur at 11:30 a.m. Friday, said Irvine Police Department spokeswoman Lt. Julia Engen. The woman, described as in her 40s, was declared dead at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after falling off a building nearGoogle'sIrvine office in what appeared to be a suicide, said Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Kris Concepcion.

Irvine police arrested nine people suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol during a checkpoint in Irvine on Dec. 30. Officers also wrote six citations for other violations. Staffers stopped 359 vehicles during the evening operation at Jamboree Road and Birch Street. Out of those, 12 were stopped for officers to administer sobriety tests. There were no significant traffic delays because of the checkpoint, police said in a statement. The checkpoint, which was staffed by the Irvine Police Department employees as well as community volunteers, was funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant.

Irvine police released the name of a woman killed in a car crash in Turtle Rock on Wednesday. Manal Darwiche, 21 of Irvine, the driver of a 1997 Nissan Sentra, died when her car crashed into a tree near Shady Canyon and Sunnyhill about 1:10 a.m., according to an Irvine Police Department news release. Police were investigating the cause, the release said. An 18-year-old Garden Grove resident, who was a passenger in Darwiche's car, was injured and taken to a hospital, the release said.

An Irvine man was arrested Monday on suspicion of stabbing and killing his brother, police said. Laurence William Sullivan, 33, was arrested about 7:11 a.m. Monday after allegedly stabbing Daniel John Sullivan, 32, in the 4100 block of Old Mill Street, according to an Irvine Police Department news release. Officers found both men with injuries about 10:50 p.m. Oct. 16. Daniel Sullivan was taken to a local hospital where he died at 11:23 p.m. Detectives were still investigating what the two men were fighting about, Lt. Julia Engen said.

Irvine police arrested a registered sex offender last week who had gone to Citrus Glen Park to play tennis, officers said. Jean Pierre Nguyen, 51, of Garden Grove was arrested for violating a July 2011 Irvine law that prohibits certain sex offenders from visiting city parks or recreational facilities, according to the Irvine Police Department. Nguyen was on probation after a conviction earlier this year for indecent exposure in Garden Grove, police said. The Orange County Probation Department contacted Irvine police believing Nguyen was at the park on Thursday.

In the weeks before New Year's Eve, local police agencies have been working hard to send a strong message against drunk driving. A multi-agency task force, coordinated by the Costa Mesa Police Department, is patrolling the streets and looking for those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. So far, the operation's been a success, said Costa Mesa Police Chief John Hensley. "Things are going very well.... The numbers [of arrests], unfortunately, have been high," Hensley said.

The 50-year-old man found dead in a burned car near San Diego Creek in Irvine last week may have committed suicide, police said. The coroner is conducting toxicology tests on the man identified as Michael Richard Timme of Irvine and attempting to determine the cause of death. The process could take several weeks, said Lt. Julia Engen, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department. "We're investigating the possibility of a suicide," she said. She added that police don't suspect foul play.

UC Irvine's Police Department officially welcomed its newest officer during a swearing-in ceremony this week. Officer Paul Riscalla took the oath at the University Hills Community Center after graduating from the Orange County Sheriff's Regional Training Academy earlier this month, according to a news release from UCI police. Riscalla is a UCI graduate who interned with the campus Police Department and then worked as a community service officer in charge of hiring. After graduating from UCI with a bachelor's degree in business economics, Riscalla worked at a start-up technology company while putting himself through reserve academies with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, according to the release.
