The murder and conspiracy trial of Rachael Mullenix nearly flew off the rails Monday afternoon, before the judge rejected a request for a mistrial by the defense and allowed the case to continue. It all began as prosecutor Sonia Balleste cross-examined defense witness Veronica Thomas, a psychologist hired to evaluate Mullenix. In the PowerPoint presentation she used to illustrate her questions about the defendant’s psychology, Balleste included an image of a poem written by Mullenix, titled “Female Player.

Depending on whether you listened to the prosecution or defense, Rachael Mullenix is either a manipulative killer and a liar who used her boyfriend to help her knock off her mom, or she is the abused victim of her violent beau and only helped him cover up a murder because she didn?t know how else to cope with a shocking act. That?s what jurors now have to decide, as they went into deliberation Monday afternoon in search of a verdict. As the trial of Mullenix, 19, neared an end, the prosecution and defense made closing arguments in a last attempt to get their cases across.

Whether Rachael Mullenix actually held the knives that killed her mother or not, she’s guilty of first-degree murder because she made sure it happened, the prosecution said in closing arguments today. “You don’t have to ever even discuss, if you don’t want to, what happened in that room,” prosecutor Sonia Balleste said. “If you believe there’s a plan to kill and you believe she committed any act in furtherance of that act, knowing she was intending to kill, you’re done.

A Huntington Beach man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Friday for helping kill his then-girlfriend’s mother in 2006 and dumping her body into Newport Harbor. Ian Allen, 23, was given the same sentence as Rachael Mullenix, 19, who was his girlfriend at the time and was convicted of the killing in July. On Sept. 23, 2006, Allen and Mullenix killed Barbara Mullenix, Rachael’s mother, because she disapproved of their relationship. Barbara Mullenix was stabbed more than 50 times with at least two knives, expert witnesses testified.

Rachael Mullenix sobbed violently Thursday as a jury found her guilty of helping arrange the brutal fatal stabbing of her mother whose body was found dumped in Newport Harbor. Mullenix?s first question after hearing the verdict was ?How could this be?? followed by ?How is my family?? her attorney David Cohn said. Mullenix was accused of getting former boyfriend Ian Allen to help her kill her mother, Barbara Mullenix, in her Huntington Beach condo in 2006. Jurors found Mullenix, 19, guilty of first-degree murder on the fourth day of deliberation.

A Huntington Beach teenager and her boyfriend were charged Monday with the murder of the girl's mother, whose body was found Sept. 13 in Newport Harbor. Rachel Mullenix, 17, and Ian Allen, 21, did not enter a plea Monday when they appeared for arraignment in Orange County Superior Court in Westminster. Mullenix is being charged as an adult. The body of 56-year-old Barbara Mullenix of Huntington Beach was found wrapped in a blanket, floating in the water between a dock and a boat near the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

A Huntington Beach man was convicted Thursday of killing his former girlfriend’s mother, in what prosecutors called a conspiracy between young people in love. After deliberations began Monday, jurors came back with a verdict Thursday morning: Ian Westleigh Allen, 23, is guilty of first-degree murder. Allen was accused of conspiring with girlfriend Rachael Mullenix, 19, to kill her mother, Barbara Mullenix, in their Huntington Beach condo. Barbara Mullenix’s body washed up near the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in 2006, with more than 50 stab wounds.

Murder suspect Ian Allen was slow to anger and never violent, his parents told jurors Thursday. “He is the least aggressive out of my three boys,” father Clyde Allen said on the witness stand. “Out of the three, he would be most easily characterized as gentle, yes. He sometimes reacts with temper, but it takes more to get him angry.” Clyde Allen went on to say he had never seen his son react violently when angry. The trial of Ian Allen, 23, of Huntington Beach continued this week.
