The Harbor View boys and girls youth swim teams pulled out a 760-540 win over Greenbrook July 7. Among the many solid performances was Harbor View's Shannon Griffin, who won two individual events and led off two relay victories in the girls 6-and-under division. On the boys side, Daniel Niehenke was strong in the 13-14 division, winning two events and placing second in another. The Harbor View swim team won the South Coast League finals, beating second-place Green Valley, 1,824-1,542. Newport Hills finished third with 1,242 points. Six league records were broken this year, all by local swimmers. Newport Hills' Patrick White set new marks in the boys 13-14 division 100-yard freestyle and the 50 backstroke while four girls records were set by Harbor View. Ashley Chandler, Katie Indvik, Vivian Liao and Tracy Kubas swam into the record book in the girls 15-18 division 200 medley relay, and Chandler also set a record in the 50 butterfly.

Justin Hanson and Jules Pouch each broke two pool records in individual events, helping the Harbor View swim team to a 741-545 victory over rival Newport Hills at the annual community dual meet at the Phase II pool in the Harbor View Homes community last Saturday. Hanson broke a 25-year old record in the boys 5-6 division of the 25-yard backstroke. He also swam to victory in the 25 freestyle. Pouch's victories in the girls 7-8 division of the 25 free and 50 free broke seven-year old records.

The Harbor View swim team collected 54 of 70 first-place finishes in six age divisions of boys and girls competition, leading to a 680-521 victory over host Greenbrooke in a youth dual meet in Fountain Valley on Saturday. The Harbor View boys won 24 races to Greenbrooke's nine within six age divisions, while the Harbor View girls eclipsed Greenbrooke, 30-7, in first-place finishes in six age groups. In the girls 15-18 division, Harbor View's Ashley Chandler, who will be a junior at Corona del Mar High in the fall, won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.74 seconds and the 50 butterfly in 28.27.

One of the biggest local youth dual swim meets of the summer was in action Saturday in the Harbor View Homes neighborhood pool in Newport Beach. The two swim programs are bounded geographically even though most of the children attend nearby Andersen Elementary. Harbor View edged rival Newport Hills, 850 464. Several records were broken in the meet, including the girls 15-18 age division 200-yard medley relay. Ashely Chandler, Holly Van Hiel, Vivian Liao and Tracy Kubas -- all attend Corona del Mar High -- completed the swim in 2:00.
