HUNTINGTON BEACH - A showdown for first place in the Sunset League ended rather quickly on Tuesday. The sun was still out by the time the Newport Harbor High boys' volleyball team left the Huntington Beach gym. The Sailors went home no longer perfect in league play and no longer on top of the league. The Sailors are the defending league champions, but the Oilers showed why they're the league favorites this season. Huntington Beach swept the Sailors, 25-22, 25-21, 25-20, ending Newport Harbor's 17-match league winning streak, which dated back to 2010.

The search is on for a new principal to lead Costa Mesa's TeWinkle Intermediate School. At the Wednesday night forum to gather input on what parents and residents want in a new principal, many comments centered on increasing community involvement. Nearly 50 parents, teachers and community members walked around the multi-purpose room and wrote their thoughts on large sheets of papers hanging from the walls. The papers were labeled with topics, including the school's greatest needs and strengths, their biggest concerns and the qualities they want to see in the new principal.

A fuse in the shot clock blew 30 seconds into the second period at Corona del Mar High. The teenagers working the scorer's table called for help and CdM Coach Barry O'Dea obliged. From the other side of the pool deck, O'Dea walked over. When he arrived, he asked a question. "System have power?" O'Dea said, before adding, "Hit reset. " At this point, with the Sea Kings ahead by three goals, their boys' water polo opponent might have wanted to start over. Play resumed five minutes later and CdM provided all the power it needed in and out of the water.
