Those of you who follow us on Facebook may have noticed some inconsistencies in how frequently we update our pages. Some days we update them, some days we don’t. That changes now. We are making social media a priority for the Daily Pilot, the Huntington Beach Independent, the Coastline Pilot and O.C. Now — a site that aggregates news and sports from those three newspapers, as well as from the Los Angeles Times and our media partner, OCLNN.Com . Thanks to our talented Web editor, Jamie Wetherbe, each of the Times Community Newspapers in Orange County has a new Facebook page.

We in the news business serve many masters, among them our sources, our readers and the truth. We hold our reporters to high standards in their pursuit of facts, expecting that they will be persistent but respectful and, when writing, fair to all sides. Things get a little more complicated when dealing with the letters to the editor and commentaries you send in for publication in the Daily Pilot, Huntington Beach Independent or Coastline Pilot. You become the writers, and you are often impassioned.

Many of our readers, particularly those who often made a special trip to the supermarket to grab the paper, asked us to put their Daily Pilot back into copies of the Los Angeles Times so they could get their local, regional, national and world news in one place. We heard you and want you to know there are now several ways to read the Pilot Wednesday to Sunday in print, and, of course, daily online. The first is to subscribe to The Times and have the Pilot delivered, with The Times, to your home.

I am proud of this year's Daily Pilot 103. That's not self-congratulations. I am thanking our readers. The bulk of the DP 103 came from them. Awhile back I wrote a column asking readers for a few suggested names to help fill out the annual list. I got dozens of nominations from emails, online comments and phone calls. Thank you, Newport-Mesa. Most of this list is yours. Except for the parts that aren't. We had to make space for our staff picks as well. My only regret is not having room for all the reader choices, though most of them are there.

I moonlight as a journalism instructor at Orange Coast College. After class on Wednesday, I began the walk from my classroom to the administration building on the other end of campus. There must have been something about my hurried gait, one made crooked by the book-and-laptop-laden messenger bag around my shoulder. A security guard in an electric golf cart pulled up next to me. "You look like you could use a ride," he said. "I could. " "Then hop in. " I did. The little engine whizzed like an electric toothbrush, and we were on our way. He was a kind older gentleman.

They say kids don't read the paper anymore. I know one who does. Mine. Don't conclude that I force her to sit down with the newspaper because my livelihood depends on people doing just that. I can't even get her to eat a cooked carrot. My 7-year-old daughter took to print on her own. Not that she's serious about Syria or anything. She's reading the funnies. Every one of them. Every day. There's a back story here. About a year ago my kid was enjoying those old holiday-themed "Peanuts" flicks.
