HUNTINGTON BEACH - Bullying has become a cause celebre, with stereotypical notions of intimidating actions and strong-arm tactics catching fire from society at large. But the sanctity of using physical and mental toughness as a means of showing superiority is not only protected, but celebrated in athletic competition. So it is that the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team found itself in position to look up to rival Golden West, after experiencing the equivalent of being knocked to the pavement, posterior first.

COSTA MESA — Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli said he really doesn't have a classic No. 3, cleanup, or No. 5 hitter this season, but rather a bunch of No. 6 and No. 7 hitters to fill in between the top and bottom of the order. Regardless, the Pirates are showing they are all about producing numbers from every region of the lineup, as was the case Thursday in their 14-6 win over visiting Golden West in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams. De facto OCC cleanup hitter Austin Saenz certainly acted the part against the Rustlers, driving in five runs and going three for five with a single, double and triple.

"Farewell, Fred Voodoo" By Amy Wilentz Simon & Schuster; 329 pages Fred Voodoo, we learn from Amy Wilentz's candid new book, is not a person but an epithet — the Haitian equivalent, more or less, of Joe Average. Wilentz spent years in Haiti as a foreign correspondent, and she picked up the term from fellow journalists who used it to describe their interview subjects. Watching those news reports, she grew to see the name as a form of packaging. "The objectification of the Haitians' victimization — that's one aspect of the Fred Voodoo syndrome," she writes.

COSTA MESA - The rowdy crowd inside the Peterson Gym wasn't enough to carry the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team over the hump on Wednesday night. Alyssa Hubbard led the Rustlers (19-3, 13-1 in conference) with 12 kills, while Bethanee Boggs added 10 and Alicia Utke chipped in nine. COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College football team spotted rival Golden West a 13-0 lead over just more than the first 15 minutes and couldn't recover Saturday night. One might say that the Rustlers' 23-21 victory, its third straight in the series now billed as the West Coast Showdown, left the Pirates a Penny short. Sophomore tailback Robert Penny, who came in with 1,412 career rushing yards and five games with at least 100 rushing yards this season, was limited to four carries for 16 yards and one touchdown due to what Coach Mike Taylor said was a sinus infection.

COSTA MESA - The road to the Orange Empire Conference men's soccer championship clearly goes through 17-time defending conference champion Santa Ana College. But, as Orange Coast College discovered Friday, Golden West may be hitting the Santa Ana recruiting trail in order to forge a pathway to making a run at the dynastic Dons. Golden West, with eight players on its roster who list Santa Ana as their home town, defeated host Orange Coast, 3-1, in a conference clash Friday to keep pace with Santa Ana atop the conference standings.
