COSTA MESA - Vanguard's Becki Huddle scored 19 points, 15 from free throws, and dished out nine assists as the Lions (14-2, 3-0 in conference) fought off Fresno Pacific Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. SANTA CLARITA - The Vanguard University baseball team won its second straight game, knocking off the host Master's College, 7-6, Saturday, in Golden State Athletic Conference action. Despite losing a 6-2 seventh-inning lead, the Lions (6-25) pushed the go-ahead run in the eighth for the win. Tim Jara, Bryan Davis and James Dent each drove in two runs for Vanguard, while Ryan Williams threw two shutout innings of relief to earn the win. SANTA BARBARA - Vanguard University's baseball team lost a tough Golden State Athletic Conference matchup to host Westmont College, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon. Joshua Case (Orange Coast College) threw eight solid innings, allowing only one earned run on nine hits with four strikeouts for the Lions (4-18, 2-14 in conference). After three walks in the bottom of the 10th inning, John Whipp's two-out single brought in the winning run for Westmont (12-9, 9-6)

BASEBALL Vanguard 7, Bethesda 2 Senior catcher John Collins went four for four with two runs batted in and senior shortstop Nick Rodda was three for four with one RBI to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday. Ian Sakry was two for four with one RBI for the winners (29-18), for whom Jordan Moak earned his first win of the season by allowing no earned runs in five innings. Vanguard plays host to Concordia in a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series beginning Friday.

The Vanguard University baseball team that had won 13 of its previous 17 games, climbed to the No. 14 national ranking, and landed in second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference, was largely missing in action on Wednesday. Coach Rob Pegg's Lions, who are two games behind San Diego Christian heading into a three-game road series with the No. 6-ranked Hawks beginning Friday, were hardly themselves in a 7-3 nonconference loss to the Cougars. Vanguard (26-14) ranks No. 2 in the GSAC in fielding (.974)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vanguard University is no longer just a women's basketball power. The Costa Mesa school's men's team defeated defending NAIA champion Georgetown of Kentucky, 93-85, on Friday to reach the NAIA Division I Final Four. The Lions (30-6) will meet St. Gregory's of Oklahoma (24-9) in the semifinals on Monday at 2 p.m. PT at Municipal Auditorium. No. 6-seeded Vanguard had not advanced past the second round in its two previous NAIA Tournament appearances. But Coach Rhett Soliday's squad, which claimed the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, has won seven in a row, including three straight in Kansas City, and is the highest seeded team remaining in the 32-team tournament.

WOMEN'S SOCCER Westmont 1, Vanguard 0 SANTA BARBARA - The host Warriors, ranked No. 3, scored in the 47th minute to earn a two-game conference sweep of the defending champion Lions, ranked No. 10, on Saturday. Tiffany DiMaculangan scored an unassisted goal for the difference. Vanguard (14-3, 7-3 in conference) finished third and is the No. 3 seed for the six-team GSAC Tournament that begins Tuesday. Vanguard will play host to No. 6-seeded Biola at a time to be determined on Tuesday.

Vanguard University Athletic Director Bob Wilson has been named one of four NAIA Athletic Directors of the Year by the National Assn. of Collegiate Athletic Directors. Wilson, who recently completed his 18th year as Vanguard's Athletic Director, was recognized for his commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, the Costa Mesa-based Vanguard campus and the surrounding community. The criteria for consideration included at least five academic years as AD, commitment to higher education and student-athletes, continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high-level accomplishments.
